Another reason not to update is if you have a PW1 and are using the hidden fonts revealed by the USE ALT FONTS trick.
Latest updates stopped you using them, I gather
I never have wifi on, so avoid updates and keep my special font.
As I have no interest in goodreads and other stuff that is not just reading, I don't need the updates for anything.

As for the original question, before I installed the jailbreak lock method for preventing updates, I used a method that (for me, anyway) was evidently effective involving placing a folder with a specific name in the Kindle's root. I've forgotten the details but I found them here, I believe. The concept was that the update created this folder and placed needed files in it. When it discovered that the folder already existed, it thought the update was partially completed. When it couldn't find anything in the folder, it quit.

That was a while ago and the devious Amazon snots might have overcome this trick but it would be worth searching for it, and whether it still works.

As was observed, yes. I still feel it is worth it for people to consider the possibility of such a possibility.

And the folder trick doesn't work anymore, either. See post #16.

my kindle voyage offered me an update last night. it did not force me to take one,. I think it said something like " an update is available, would you like to download it"... and then nothing happened after " yes please" until I did a restart, at which point it began the install
I accepted out of curiosity, wondering if anything would happen re hyphenation / fonts - but all looks exactly as it did before the update.

( I had just " bought" the new for July Kindle first book: Elven, which has the new annoying hyphenation when read on my Fire HDX. So I enabled wifi on voyage to see how it behaved there after a direct download, - no hyphens. Then I allowed the update/ rebooted.... still no hyphens. Maybe that was some minor update and not the anticipated "biggie", as the bookerly font has yet to appear. )

Wow! That's great if Amazon is no longer forcing software updates!

5.6.2.1 (2634390002)

strangely, I thought it was on 5.6.2.1 before the update also, but I watched it update!. maybe it's a minor revision and that is what the number in the brackets indicates ).

this is the first and only time it has updated since new. i keep it in aeroplane mode for battery life, except for when I want to download a new amazon book.

NB remember I did not test the " no thanks" option but I reckon that user is in control of if/when to accept update.

Curious and curiouser. I have 5.6.2.1 (2634390002) as well. I installed it manually in April. Wonder what would have happened if I had waited for it to auto-update.

when I google the whole line i.e.

5.6.2.1 (2634390002)

i get lots of not-in-english hits but some are referring to paperwhite
firmware. in fact one search result leads back here to a 40 page thread on paperwhite/touch device hacks, in developers corner:

So is the core firmware the same in both, even though voyage also has buttons and adaptive lighting ?

Well, my Kindle Voyage auto-updated itself from 5.6.2.1 to 5.6.5 without asking me first.

As an experiment, I left the WiFi on on my UNregistered KV for a few weeks after 5.6.5 was released and nothing happened (which, of course, doesn't necessarily mean anything since it can take months for updates to roll-out automatically), but within 48 hours of registering it, my KV auto-updated itself without asking me first.

In the meantime, I'm playing with the extra features registration brings (WhisperSync!) to see if I like them enough to keep my KV registered.
