Piracy goes 3D!

This opens endless possibilities for design pirates. Always thought of getting one myself. At least one that isn't limited to using plastics. |

copyright is the reason why we'll never have star trek-style replicators or nano machines. they're probably investigating drm for this as we speak.

Wonder if it can do pieces in billet aluminum or powder- coated stainless steel. I need some long- out of production (and even longer out of patent) parts made for my '55 Jeep.

Heck yeah! Especially if it was cheaper than buying one from a dealership. Of course, with all the DRM that would be added to the downloaded car, I'd probably only be able to use a specific brand of gas from one retailer (unless I opted to re-refine the gas using some sort of open-source, build-it-in-your-garage home refinery).

There's a revolution underway; We're slowly moving away from a mass production culture to a DIY culture as it becomes easier and cheaper for people to do things at home that would have taken a huge infrastructure before.
And it's not just 3D printers and manufactured products; there's also a growing biohacker movement (thanks to cheap DIY DNA replicating equipment) and even the ease of self-publishing can be seen as an example of this. Last edited by Ninjalawyer; 02-16-2012 at 10:45 AM. |

Watermarked downloaded cars. Getty-images will have demolition crews trolling the streets looking for things that have been printed without purchasing the license.

The price has certainly come down, but still has a way to go before they become anything more than a curiosity. I priced an instant prototype machine about 20 years ago and they were over $100,000.

Lots of PD design out there. Remember, patent only last 20 years. If an object was copyrighted, you're S.O.L., but who ever copyrighted a car, or blender, or stove? Go look for an @C symbol. Not there prior to 1976? FAir game!
Just don't put a name on it, most names were trademarked... |

I think that eventually we will get to the way knitting was in the days where people were making their own clothes. You buy a magazine with the models and make your own.
