Disable auto-updates Kindle Paperwhite 6th generaton

Can anyone provide current guidance on disabling firmware updates for a Kindle Paperwhite 6th generation? The device currently has firmware version 5.12.4. I use wifi and an amazon account for sendto kindle.

My Paperwhite 10th generation device recently auto-updated to version 5.15.1 and the results are not good for me. Would like to avoid this occurring on the Paperwhite 6th generation.

There is an old post here indicating that simply adding a new empty folder named 'update.bin.tmp.partial' prevents any updates. Sounds rather simple to be true.

Thanks in advance.

Without a jailbreak, to prevent an OTA update is to keep WiFi off.

OK so to continue using wifi and avoid firmware updates, where is the current procedure to follow, and is it only jailbreak or is there a second step? This is something I have never done before. Thanks.

Both of those two peaces of information can't be correct at the same time: you're either wrong about which Kindle (Paperwhite) model you actually have or about the firmware version.

6th gen Paperwhite aka PW2 as it is referred to here on Mobilread stopped getting updates with firmware 5.12.2(.2)
The only Paperwhite model that had 5.12.4 was PW4 (aka 10th gen Paperwhite):

I can have the kindle device version incorrect as I purchased it used (to get around the auto update that just spoiled my 10th generation device). The device info screen shows firmware 5.12.4, wifi and 3g capable, but not the device version.

So being sure only of the firmware version, is there a procedure that will block autoupdates?

Use this Wiki page to correctly identify your device by its serial number:

Once jailbreak-ed the method for blocking firmware updates isn't Kindle model specific. The jailbreak method itself is dictated by firmware version.
