You will need a USB cable to charge you unit. What you plug the USB cable into is the question. The surge suppressor device will likely work as will any computer with a USB port cable of supplying sufficient current. There are also dedicated chargers available all over the world that also have USB output capability. Any of those will work as well. USB is universally 5.0-5.2 Volts but the current capability varies and by specification a computer may only support 500 mA which is why it may take longer to charge your device than a dedicated charger. The adapter that comes with it has a USB output which is why it works. When you get the unit it will be clear.

Can someone tell me how the warranty works with the PP? The warranty page states the unit must be sent back to Astak prepaid by the customer. Does that only mean the freight paid to send it TO Astak, or does that imply that freight must be prepaid to send FROM Astak back to you? ie: you pay for freight both ways?

Kind of curious as I'm in Australia and generally you pay for the product to get to the service centre for warranty and the company sends the unit back at their expense.

yes, that is the way it works. You pay to get it there and they pay to get it back to you as I understand it.

That's how most warranties work that I've ever used, but I've never tried to do anything internationally. One would think that since they're willing to sell internationally then their willing to do warranties that way too. You could always email support@astak.com and ask.

See Support for EZ Reader devices outside North America. You pay to send it to Astak and Astak pays to send it back.

I don't believe that GST has to be paid on importing such an item into Australia. GST here is for goods/services sold or consumed in Australia. Regarding customs I believe anything under $1000 is stamp duty free. Can anyone who has bought a PP in Australia able to confirm no extra charges when they received it?

To quote from the Australian customs web site:

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5653

Quote:
Importing Goods By Post

Imported goods may arrive into Australia by airfreight, express courier, sea cargo or via the post. The method of delivery determines the Customs clearance formalities and charges.

If you are receiving your goods via the post you are considered the importer of those goods and these may be subject to Customs duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Generally, all goods imported into Australia are subject to Customs duty and GST and are assessed for community protection risks. However, all goods (except for tobacco and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if the value of the goods is A$1000 or less.

Australians are lucky. Here in Canada you have to pay for anything over CDN$20 unless it's made in USA or Mexico.
