The Tolino Shine software will not support a lot in the first version of the firmware.

The development team announced that dictionaries and the marking and saving of text passages will get added in a future firmware update.

It seems that Deutsche Telekom developed this device really fast. The hardware seems to be very similar to Kobo Glo and Bookeen HD FrontLight. (Source)

Since there have been huge controversies about Amazon and its policy in Germany in the past weeks, this deveice is developed as an Anti-Kindle for Germany. You can upload ebooks directly from the deveice, you get 25 GB instead of just 5 GB, the deveice supports Epub files.

Doesn't support custom fonts... Scarcely with formats
The 1st hack of it making cyanogenmod with eg. Coolreader possible will raise usability by multitudes.
It's a pity: a device with half done beta quality software is declared as a great achievement.

The design is, of course, a matter of personal taste.

When I look at a side-by-side-picture of the Tolino and a Kindle Paperwhite, however, I see a huge lower bezel with a single button in the middle of it. To me, personally, this looks awkward (altough it might be good for people who like to hold their e-reader in one hand).

Best regards,
Andy

I like the idea behind this deveice.

But somehow it looks like an Ebook Reader for prisoners.

The Deutsche Telekom should improve the design a bit..

Spoiler:

Why U not like it? It's a phone, dude! Use it!

And I personally would always prefer the device that has the back-button over the device that doesn't. It is soooo useful!

I came across the real thing in my local Hugendubel-bookshop yesterday. It doesn't really look any worse than a Kindle. The firmware was quite responsive and you can expand the memory with a SD card.
Additionally, you can use it for free with any Telekom hotspot. As free hotspots are a scarcity in Germany - we may thank the content industry for that - this service is a significant bonus. Telekom covers high speed trains, airports, train stations, fast food restaurants and many other places with its hotspots.

I like the idea of another e-reader with a micro-SD slot and few proprietary restrictions. If the idea catches on, it will mean more e-reader and content choices and a viable market to support them.

Tolino needn't get the bezel right on their first Shine. Even Amazon got the Kindle wrong at first.

Props to T's marketing researchers for naming the device after a form of clairvoyance that consumers associate with horror novels. I'm inclined to buy a product from a company that would do that unintentionally (slightly less so from one that would decorate the box with Jack Nicholson's grin).

The layout of the accessories page is hilarious.

I love the crude butterfly cutouts circling an elated case-confident Shine in the very last image. That might have made more sense if the style of the page evoked a Victorian child's scissor-forged collage, or the Shine's face and button were bedizened with Art Nouveau curlicues.

But really, where's the fun in making sense?

The bezel isn't that bad. It gives the reader the format of a traditional paperback and many people do not want to hold the reader while touching the screen.

Not at the moment, no dictionary support and no note taking or even highlighting. There is also no folder support. They say they will update the software soon, but will still not have dictionary support right away.

Here are some pictures of the lit screen.

Also, you can change the font size, but not the borders and line height, per this (German) review, and the top third of the brightness settings can not be adjusted to different levels.
