Canada: Sony PRS-700 price jump from $399 to $449?

Hey guys,

I'm going to Canada on March 18th and I wanted to buy the new PRS 700 for C$399. I've already sold my trusty 505 for about C$440 (if you convert it from €) so I would've gotten a free upgrade... Now it seems Sony jacked up the prices and I'll have to pay extra. Any ideas why they raised the price of the 700 (maybe REALLY high interest in it?) and if they're gonna drop anytime soon?

Or even better - do you know a retailer that still sells the 700 for C$399? Toronto area would be preferred. Dell has them listed at C$439 but I'd rather have it fit in with my old plans if possible at all.

CAD has been Devalued again

400 U.S. dollars = 504.919812 Canadian dollars

be glad its not 505 bucks.

its actually cheaper than it is in the us now!... i know it doesnt seem that way to you though.

449 Canadian dollars = 355.700045 U.S. dollars
im sure us americans would love to save $44 on a 700.

Well I was aware of the apparent price disparity for AMERICANS, but for me with my strong euros burning a hole in my pocket it sucks :P I'd have just preferred it to stay at the same level.

well your euros are worth more Cad Now, sure it would have been nice to catch it when the market is low on CAD, and the prices of american stuff hasnt caught up yet. but you are still getting it for cheaper than it costs everywhere else, revel in that

I thought I saw some 700s' still going for about 4bills on the Grey market
and online distribution channels... but you'll have to google for the most

If you can get $440 CAD for a 505 in Germany than I suggest that you stock up on them while you're in Canada. You can still grab them for $279 in some computer shops (though they are rising to $349 quickly.)

As for the 700 you're SOL. They were still $379 a couple weeks ago but now every single store has them for $439-499. Prices are finally catching up to the value of our dollar. About 8 months ago it was worth 1.05 USD but today it's down to 0.79 USD.

unfortunately so, tectonic. I WOULD stock up on 505s if I had the needed funds and any way to get them into Germany without paying import taxes (we're allowed to import stuff up to the value of 450€ without paying imp tax). Sadly I don't have the funds and I can't conveniently smuggle 505s to Germany so I'll just bite the bullet and look for the cheapest 700 I can get now. Would you guys advise for or against ordering it now and picking it up at a friends house in Canada when I get there?

If you can somehow find one at 399 then I'd say buy it now. This way your friend can also test it for a while and make sure that everything is ok. Defects are rare but they do happen.

You should also check with Sony and make sure that the warranty is valid in Germany. Sony devices bought here are branded for Canada. Some companies won't honor warranties unless they were bought in the region where you live.
