Sigil 8.2 - Windows 7 64bit crash

I have been using Sigil for many years. After installing 8.1 it would crash every once in a while. After installing 8.2 it crashed continuously.

SFC /scannow found not integrity errors.
I removed/reinstalled the x86/x64 MS Visual C++ 2013 Redistributables.
I uninstalled Sigil, deleted all sigil folders etc and reinstalled v8.2 x64.
Still crashing.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Show me a 64-bit AMD processor that doesn't.

@ebookreadr:
0.8.1 and 0.8.2 both use the exact same version of Qt5WebKit (5.3.2), so 0.8.2 crashing more frequently doesn't really track--from a technical aspect. Perhaps you're just stumbling across that which would make both versions crash more often since installing 0.8.2? What would help the most, is if you could help nail down exact, reproduceable steps that make the crash happen. Are you moving/docking widgets when it happens? Closing Sigil? Searching/Replacing?

You said you deleted all Sigil folders, so I'm assuming that includes the stuff in AppData\Local\sigil-ebook\sigil ? Deleting the Sigil.ini file in there has fixed many a crashing Sigil installation in the past. Make sure you didn't overlook it.

Hi,

There are numerous bug reports on the QtWebKit site in Qt 5.3.2 surrounding and aborts due to improperly allocated memeory. These seem to be compiler dependent, so using Doug's Sigil version for Windows might work as it uses a completely different version of the compiler for Qt and Sigil.

Alternatively, there are reports fo similar failures from using bad fonts and causing crashes. There was one font change in 0.8.2 that went from using "Consolas" as the default CodeView font to "Courier New" as the default font to fix another reported bug.

So if you can get Sigil 0.8.1 or 0.8.2 to to work, try changing the Sigil Appearance Preferences for CodeView to some other fixed width font and see if your troubles go away.

Users of this Sigil version who kept their previous settings would *not* see this change as the font would still default to Consolas for them. Only new users and clean installs will be impacted by the font change if the problem is indeed related to a bad font.

Please let me know if any of these help.

Thanks,

KevinH

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you.
When using 8.1 I was editing single books. After installing 8.2, I started editing a series of books. The crash happens when I open a new book while having the previous book still open in Sigil. It sometimes doesn't crash until I actually click on something - doesn't seem to matter what I click on. If I close Sigil after each book, then re-open it works ok.

KevinH: I also changed the font back to "Consolas" with no change - still crashing.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

That is an interesting piece of information. On Windows and Linux if you open a book in Sigil, you are actually replacing the current book. Are you by any chance using BookView to do your editing instead of CodeView? Do you have the Preview Window enabled at that time?

On Mac OS X, if you open a file you simply get a new MainWindow and can switch back and forthing editing one book and then the other. Since I use and develop on Mac OS X, I have never seen this issue. Please try changing to CodeView and turning Off Preview before trying to overwrite it with a new book? Also, please try doing a file save as on the old book, before attempting to overwrite it.

Does any of these impact what happens?

Thanks,

KevinH

@KevinH - I think its Book View + Preview, Code View and Preview together seem to be OK, Book View by itself seems to be OK.

Aside : On Windows if you open EPUBs with Sigil (eg from file manager or calibre), you will get a new Sigil process for each EPUB opened, or if you start Sigil multiple times you will get multiple processes. It's only when you use File->Open that the current process is 'reused'.

Hi BetterRed

Again I did not know that. On Mac OS X, double-clicking in the Finder (equivalent of Explorer) will generally open a new Window in the current app (all with a single process).

Can you recreate this Windows Crashing at all? Does it matter (crashingwise) if you use File->Open on Sigil versus launching another process? Which one crashes? Or is it both? It is really hard to believe that in this day and age, that one process can cause a second process to crash if not at a driver level or kernel level (ring 0)? So I am assuming the bug report was only for using File->Open in Sigil.

Thanks,

KevinH

I have always used Sigil with the following open:

Book browser (showing folders, files etc.)
Table of Contents
Preview - Used very small so I can see the overall effect with changes.
Search
The main section is switched back and forth between book and code views.
This is the way I have used it since v7.2 - maybe earlier versions as well (7.2 is the earliest copy I have on my old backups).

I only use Sigil directly via it's shortcut and then by file>open for the next edit. To read a book I use my nook or the ebook viewer in caliber (rarely).

This is the way I have been doing since the first time I used Sigil - in other words since the beginning. I have used 7.4 on a laptop in Vista with no problem. I have since put Windows 8.1 on the laptop, but have not used sigil on it because it is not used as my main computer.

Hi ebookreadr,
If you are in CodeView with Preview but *NOT* BookView, and use File->Open to overwrite the current book with a new book, does it still crash?

This is the way I have used it since v7.2 - maybe earlier versions as well (7.2 is the earliest copy I have on my old backups).

I only use Sigil directly via it's shortcut and then by file>open for the next edit. To read a book I use my nook or the ebook viewer in caliber (rarely).

This is the way I have been doing since the first time I used Sigil - in other words since the beginning. I have used 7.4 on a laptop in Vista with no problem. I have since put Windows 8.1 on the laptop, but have not used sigil on it because it is not used as my main computer.

@Kevin - Oh yes it matters

My tests were done within a single instance of Sigil, I started it from start->search->sigil, then

File->Open junk1.epub, scribbled in it, saved it,
File->Open junk2.epub, scribbled in it - if Bookview and Preview were active it crashed when I did the scribble, otherwise not.

In this scenario there is one process - i.e. only one main window

If I double click on epubs in file manager I get a process (window) for each EPUB - no crashing in that scenario.

It was this that prompted me to stick my oar in, as its not my standard way of working

I start most programs from the data - particularly viewers, editors etc.

Thanks,

KevinH

Sorry, I am unable to determine that. Sigil has stopped crashing.

The only changes made since the last crash are:
1. Firefox was giving me Adobe Flash version notices and I updated to "Adobe Flash Player 16 NPAPI"
2. Handbrake to v0.10.0 (I'm not sure if this was updated before or after the last bunch of crashing)

No changes to Windows or Sigil, nor were any other programs installed.

If it starts crashing (with the same errors) again, should I keep adding to this thread or start another?

Thanks for everyone's help!

You are running without a anti-virus/security suite?

Those frequently update (modules) in background, without user intervention.

I am running MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes (manually), Privatefirewall 7.0 (not updated for a while - done manually when notified of updates). Windows updates are also done manually. None done lately.
