Problem importing files to book
I've been using Sigil for quite a few years, usually by exporting from InDesign to epub and then cleaning up using Sigil. Occasionally I've needed to add images, and never had a problem - until now. Now I get the message "you don't have permission to open this file." I'm the creator of the files, and I've double checked the permissions within the file, the file works in every other program (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) just fine, but can't be imported into Sigil or Calibre, for that matter. I tried adding the file directly to the ebook via opening the epub using zip, and adding the file, and it shows up there just fine, and even works in the html using Dreamweaver. But even added that way, the file can't be placed on a Sigil page. What's up???? Any ideas???

Just the one file? Other files work fine?

And like Diap asked, is it just this specific file? Or when you try to add any images? |

Yeah, you must right-click on the Images folder, then choose Add Existing Files, and find your image. Then you must point to it in Code View, something like <img alt="My Pretty Picture" src="../Images/prettypic.jpg" width="100%"/>
That's how I do it. Sigil has redundant file options, so there are probably other ways as easy or easier. |

Not just one file. Several files, even tried with ones that were created back when I could add files.
And no, one can add files to a project from outside the epub book file, there's a button above the field for adding images already in that you can click to go outside the epub to add an image. It then adds it to the images folder. And yup, I've done that before. Just won't work now. I guess I was wondering if this is happening to anyone else, such as an upgrade is causing the issue for some of us. Actually, I'm wondering if the last Windows 7 upgrades are the issue, although I backed my machine up to prior to the last couple of Windows upgrades. No joy, but maybe I didn't go to a far enough past back up. |

Actually, you can add an image from outside the images folder, by clicking on the box about the add line for folder images. But... thinking maybe that was the issue, I actually unzipped the epub file, added two images, and rezipped. The images show up in the zip file, but are still unusable inside of Sigil. Still get the error message that I'm not allowed to open the files. I made them, so that's a stupid statement, and I am shown with full rights to work with the files in the file Properties.

You're not, by any chance, meddling around in the temp folders Sigil uses to expand epubs into while Sigil has them open are you? Last edited by DiapDealer; 01-24-2020 at 09:56 PM. |

I don't believe the error message you're getting is from Sigil. A search of the source code shows no error message strings that use that kind of phrasing. Can you copy the exact text of the error message and post it here, please?
Also, what version of Sigil are you using? |

Actually, I'm seeing this in the changelog for the next release of Sigil:
"- Fix bug in Insert Files from Disk" Wondering if it's related. I'll see if I track down the bug discussion. |

There was definitely an issue with the Insert Files utility in Sigil v1.0.0. I can see the commit where it was fixed, but I can't find any conversations about how the issue manifested.
If you're using v1.0.0, I'm betting this was the same issue. If so, the good news is it's been fixed, but the bad news is that a new version with the fix hasn't been released yet. We're hoping soon(ish). |

No permissions error was reported, but this issue was exactly mentions using Insert File, and then clicking the Other Files button to add external files as the problem. Hopefully that's the same issue.

Since adding files worked before (both using the program, the easiest method) and adding by entering them into the epub via zip) it probably has to do with some update Windows through in there. Sometimes they just don't like to play together nicely - Windows and everybody else. |
