Location Services drains battery
Com.nokia.odnp.service related to Main \ Swipe down \ More \ Location-Based Services drained battery again. I turned it off.
This happened after a prior firmware upgrade and my battery died with it. I then had turned it off and the battery returned to normal. Then I turned on location based services and it used no current. Now it happened again. Does anyone know what "location based services does?" Last time the firmware was upgraded to 7.3.0. This time it was upgraded again to 7.3.1. I'll turn location based services back on in a day or so. Evidently, that module is used to validate country of ownership when Amazon upgrades the firmware. It appears that it must be on to get the firmware upgrade but drains the battery indefinitely after the upgrade. Turning it off and then on again a day or two seems to correct the problem. What did the upgrade in the firmware to 7.3.1 do? Last edited by sirmaru; 04-30-2013 at 09:01 PM. |

It provides services based on your location.
Seriously, applications ask for your permission to use your location all the time. Facebook, Google search results might be tailored to your geographic location, mapping software, weather forcasting apps, the list is endless. Sure, a lot of hardware uses gps to provide your location to apps/websites, but geolocation based on IP addresses is also done... which is what the location based services on the Fire are limited to (but I'm guessing future incarnations of the Fire will have gps). If you don't make use of location based services (or use apps that make use of it) just turn it off and be done with it. 7.3.0 to 7.3.1 has to be some pretty minor bug-fixes. Not likely anything feature-related. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-30-2013 at 09:16 PM. |

Coincidently it had this effect when upgrading the firmware to 7.3.0 and now again to 7.3.1. Thus, it MUST be related to the firmware upgrade. Leaving it off permanently may prevent the firmware from upgrading.
Turning it off for a day or two ends its aberrant behavior. |
