The Snow Empress is the twelfth in Laura Joh Rowland's Sano Ichiro series. It's on sale for $2.99 right now in the US. Titles in this series also don't go on sale very often, so grab it now if you want it.

Quote:
Japan, 1699: On a moonlit night on the northern frontier island of Ezogashima, a woman is running through the forest when an arrow strikes her dead. Meanwhile, in the city of Edo, the young son of Sano Ichiro, the samurai detective who has risen to power in the shogun's court, vanishes during a moon-watching festival. When one of Sano's political rivals hints that the boy was kidnapped—and may be in Ezogashima—he and his wife, Reiko, begin a desperate journey to find their son…only to discover that the local ruler, Lord Matsumae, is holding the entire province hostage for another crime: The murder of his mistress.

So Sano strikes a deal: He will solve the mistress's murder if Matsumae will free the hostages and return his son. Soon, however, Sano and Reiko find themselves caught up in a dangerous scheme that includes clan warfare, bitter jealousy, and murderous betrayal as they race to unravel the mystery of The Snow Empress.

Castle Skull is the second in John Dickson Carr's Henri Bencolin series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and it's discountable at Kobo US.

Quote:
Alison has been murdered. But his blazing body was seen running about the battlements of Castle Skull.

And so a dark shadow looms over the Rhineland where Inspector Henri Bencolin and his accomplice Jeff Marle have arrived from Paris. Entreated by the Belgian financier D'Aunay to investigate the gruesome and grimly theatrical death of actor Myron Alison, the pair find themselves at the imposing hilltop fortress Schloss Schädel, in which a small group of suspects are still assembled.

As thunder rolls in the distance, Bencolin and Marle enter a world steeped in macabre legends of murder and magic to catch the killer still walking the maze-like passages and towers of the keep.

This new edition of John Dickson Carr's spirited and deeply atmospheric whodunit also features the rare Inspector Bencolin short story 'The Fourth Suspect.'

The Tattoo Murder Case by Akimitsu Takagi is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Kinue Nomura survived World War II only to be murdered in Tokyo, her severed limbs discovered in a room locked from the inside. Gone is the part of her that bore one of the most beautiful full-body tattoos ever rendered. Kenzo Matsushita, a young doctor who was first to discover the crime scene, feels compelled to assist his detective brother, who is in charge of the case. But Kenzo has a secret: he was Kinue’s lover, and soon his involvement in the investigation becomes as twisted and complex as the writhing snakes that once adorned Kinue’s torso.

The Tattoo Murder Case was originally published in 1948; this is the first English translation.

Bitter Wash Road (apa Hell to Pay) is the first in Garry Disher's Constable Hirsch series. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. I had a chance to read an ARC of the third title in the series, Consolation, and really liked it - sort of Tony Hillerman for Australia. So I'm happy to see this one on sale now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YYMR1P9
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07YYMR1P9

Spoiler:
Quote:
ONE DEAD-END POSTING. ONE DEAD BODY.
A TRAGIC ACCIDENT? THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK...

Constable Paul 'Hirsch' Hirschhausen is a whistle-blower. Formerly a promising metropolitan detective, now hated and despised, he's been exiled to a one-cop station in South Australia's wheatbelt. So when he heads up Bitter Wash Road to investigate gunfire and finds himself cut off without backup, there are two possibilities. Either he's found the fugitive killers thought to be in the area. Or his 'backup' is about to put a bullet in him.

He's wrong on both counts. But Tiverton - with its stagnant economy, entrenched racism and rural isolation - has more crime than one constable can handle. And when the next call-out takes him to the body of a sixteen-year-old girl, it's clear that whether or not Hirsch finds her killer, his past may well catch up with him.

One is to take up where he left off, abducting young victims and leaving them scarred in both mind and body. The other is to get revenge on the woman who stopped him all those years ago.

Also, while checking CJ Box's books in the UK, I also found an omnibus of the first six Joe Pickett books available for £4.68 in the UK. So if you want/need most or all of these books, that's a pretty good price. OTOH, eReaderIQ indicates that this has been as low as £0.99 in the past few years, and as low as £1.89 in the past year. So if you are patient, you can probably do really well on this one, but £4.68 for six books is pretty darn good as it is.

Note that the name "Picket" is mispelled in the title of the omnibus...

Joe Picket 1-6 contains Open Season, Savage Run, Winterkill, Trophy Hunt, Out of Range, and In Plain Sight
