Unhappy Cannot enter recovery menu

Hi,

I have a PW3 for quite some time. All of a sudden, it failed to update the system and stuck at the "tree screen". I tried both restart and hard start (40s) but neither worked. Now I tried to update the version through serial interface. However, I could not enter the recovery menu. Every time I saw the output "Press [ENTER] for recovery menu..." I pressed enter but it did not work.

Below is what I see in the serial screen log

You can not press a key fast enough, the time has passed when the message prints.
Instead:
As soon as you see the start of the start-up output, press AND HOLD a key, do not let up until the messages end.

I tried to press and hold ENTER when I saw the "Starting kernel …" message, but it did not work. It just ignored my input and went ahead to BOOTING DEFAULT.

Have you checked your TX connection?!
Because it seems that you receive data from the device (RX line), but you can't send data (TX line).

You are right, the TX connection got problem. I could enter the Recovery Menu after fixing it. But after I made a choice, I was asked to key in a password. Is it expected and what is the password?

That must be the "main" system (touchscreen Kindles, except for the most recent, are all dual-boot/dual-system machines).
The "main" system does not allow logins.

Only the "diag" system supports logins (and use of a password).

The "snapshots" thread always has the most recent KindleTool version that is available.
KindleTool will translate your device's serial number to the diags system password.
