'Hudson River Bracketed' refers to an early 19th century architectural style and in the novel and its sequel, THE GODS ARRIVE, Mrs. Wharton gives a portrait of the American literary scene and, in the words of Cynthia Woolf, they are "her final attempts to sum up the artist's life." The novel was a favorite of Mrs. Wharton's.
