Can't say that I'm terribly surprised by most of that. The big surprise is that many indie authors make a living wage. I suspect that it depends on the definition of indie author.

Sorry, should've made it clear.
It's referenced in one of the TPV comments and when I followed up...

For those that don't read KKR's blog: one of the things she does is collect bad contract clauses and clauses that are exploited to authors' detriment. Info she passes along without naming names. Just so authors dealing with tradpub will know what clauses to negotiate away. Or walk away over.

(In this case, it happens to be first-hand knowledge. They're doing it to her.)

Ok after 5 minutes of searching the TVP page linked above I was able to figure out KKR was Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

But I could not find her blog.

I was interested in reading some of the "bad contract clauses" but did not see it in the KKR page link from the TPV link above.....

Can you link or list her blog page?

It is a regular multi-week topic she revisits every august.
Try searching for "business rusch" "deal breakers" and you'll get seven or eight different columns. Things like rights grabs, unattainable reversion clauses, book squatting...

What it comes down to is that an author needs an IP lawyer (with serious court experience) on retainer just for dealing with the BPHs. And even then bad things happen...
