best reader for Russian language

Hello,

my friend would like to get an eInk reader... he particularly likes my Sony PRS-505. But what if he wants to read stuff in Russian? An embedded font will work, of course, but then the page turns on the Sony take longer and it's not so good. What about on other devices, like the Cybook?

Which device will best accommodate both Russian and English fonts?

Thanks for your advice.

The Cybook allows you to install your own ttf fonts. I also have otf fonts on it that work, even though they are not officially supported.

That's fine if you ONLY want to read in Russian (or other languages which use the Cyrillic alphabet), but it's not very practical if you want to read using both the Roman and Cyrillic alphabets. A device like the Gen3 which lets you load your own fonts is (IMHO) a better solution for that.

Eh? Russifying your reader doesn't disable Roman alphabet.

If this refers to my post than it's not qute true: you can read English texts without any problems, although the fonts in the image don't have some characters (like umlauts etc), so you probably will have problems with languages like French or German.

Update: always listen to igorsk

Harry, does loading your own fonts on the Gen3 cause slower page turns?

Actually you can have a font which includes both Cyrillic and extended Latin set (with French, German and whatnot). You'll only need to make sure your Russian TXT files are in Unicode, the rest will work just fine.

No. The fonts which you load yourself are treated in exactly the same way as the ones supplied.

If your friend lives in Ukraine, like you, he definitely should look first on LBook V3 - sold in every Foxtrot store, for example, for about 330$. Russian support is "Out of the box" + one year of Ukrainian warranty. If he liked Sony 505 more (which is quit possible) - it would be the best choice for him (after reflashing with this firmware. Cybook is too expansive for Ukraine - 350 euros + custom duty, it would be about 500 euros, way too much.

Nah. As noted above, I flashed my 505 and both Cyrillic and Roman texts work great, with fast page turns. Don't worry, there will be more legitimate opportunities to pimp the Gen3 here, undoubtedly.
