The 'main' OS file system is corrupted beyond recovery.
Charge the Kindle on a wall charger for a minimum of 24 hours (the battery management chip is firmware controlled and your firmware is toast). The little led light is also under firmware control, ignore it for the same reason. From u-boot prompt, boot into the 'diags' OS (these kindles are dual-boot). Use 'diags' menu to export USB storage (and hook cable to pc). The password you have is for the 'diags' system, all password usage is blocked on the 'main' system (which is currently trash anyway). Put the Amazon update at top of visible storage. Remove USB cable (USB storage will auto-unexport). Reboot. OR Near top of index page entries, find the "prefix" drop-down box, set filter to either Tutorial or Tools, click 'show threads' - - Scroll down to something like: Serial jailbread for dummies. OR Select either the jailbreak index sticky or the master index sticky, in there find more "serial port" thingies. My list above is complete, but those things you can find will give you context and examples to each of what I listed. Which is all you need (in addition to the list above), some context. |

Yay
Thanks back up and working.
INFO:bundle /mnt-us/update_kindle_paperwhite_v2_5.8.9.2.bin was successful i was 95% there. problem i had was the faulty usb cable so when i was in diags originally could not get to connect to pc. just was 2nd guessing myself that i was missing some tools as was most guides were able to transfer files prior or already jailbroken. is there any checks you recommend i do before removing the serial port. i will be adding a file to stop any other OTA updates so this does not happen again. it was your replies to other threads that got me as far as i did, once again thanks Spoiler:

That was what got you into trouble to begin with, didn't it? Of course, none of our update_*.bin packages are packaged for your device. But you might as well install the jailbreak now, since you are all setup for it. The attachment is the single file jail break (this is all there is to it). Before using it, remove (rename) the file without the ".txt" extension. I had to add that to keep the forum attachment bot happy. Make the root file system writable, Copy the renamed file to the directory: /etc/uks That directory will already have two keys in it (Amazon's). Now you are jail broken. You will need to install the "hotfix" also. It is too late at night for me to think about that one right now, so tomorrow morning I'll add some directions for that (unless you can find them in one of the serial jail break threads). no device was never jailbroken\modified. i had not charged for a while and when i picked up had kindle screen with dim battery icon on screen. tried charging and thats when was unable to boot. on the hold power to reset was stuck at kindle screen.
just thought it was an OTA update that tried to install that caused kindle to fail to boot, what else could have caused it ill have a look at jail breaking while serial cable is still connected. |

Must have been a different thread/conversation that someone bricked their PW3 by trying to install the downgrade for the 4GB model. Yours is (was) the one with the partially installed update. You can always just cut and tuck the wires into the case before you close it up now. Your will be that much closer to installing the JB if you decide to do that in the future. Although the file is only 277 bytes in size, you probably will not miss that much storage? (This post is longer than 277 bytes.) Last edited by knc1; 06-04-2017 at 10:17 PM. |

And if you actually owned one of the grayscale display Kindles, then you would know they do not run Android.

But even more specifically, they are both (different) Linux distributions. At the internal system level, the Linux kernel for Android only has one (or two, depending) additional system calls than the mainstream Linux kernel. There are many more differences in user land software, but that does not enter into this question (file systems are (usually) system level not user level software). Ignoring for simplicity sake, the various fuse filesystems. In the case of grayscale Kindles, all user files are kept on an externally accessible, FAT-32 file system. You do not need any purchased, special, recovery program. Any decent one for FAT-32 will do just fine. The one recommended here is: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk (Note that it also can process the filesystem types used internally, but its use is not a solution for this specific post problem.) None of which is relevant to this thread. The problem encountered here is with the file system areas that are not part of the user information storage. = = = = = In answer to your question: Yes, I am sure. I have over a 1/2 century of hands-on experience with computer systems design and implementation. That includes the original Unix and the beginnings of Linux (and of a bunch of things you may not have ever heard of). Last edited by knc1; 06-20-2017 at 10:32 PM. |
