Apple Jumping on the Phablet Bandwagon

Those 3.5" screens of the original iPhone seem teeny tiny by today's standards, but now the Apple faithful may be able to have their phablets too. Apple is currently developing phablet-sized iPhones, possibly for a Fall 2014 release.

It was just a matter of time. You can't ignore such a market trend forever. While some have tried to portray phablets as a passing niche trend, they are here to stay.

Quote:
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple plans to release 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone models in the third quarter of 2014. Both versions will reportedly feature curved glass screens (more specifically, the displays will "curve downward at the edges").

Offering various iPhone form factors could be a smart idea for Apple, considering its main competition -- Samsung's Android-powered phones -- sell at many different sizes and price points.

Sounds about right, by Fall 2014 it would be 3 years since Android had phablets, so the trend continues.

I cannot see the appeal, but to each his own, I guess. So are they going to make pants pockets huge as well, or are guys going to have to start carrying murses* to accommodate their phablets?

Still hating the word 'phablet.' It offends me visually and aurally. I'm usually not one to condone human-on-text violence, but I hope it get's drunk, chokes on its own vomit and dies soon.

The type of device the word is intended to describe, however, I have no real opinions on.

Perhaps it'll choke on that superfluous apostrophe

I agree though, awful word.

What? You're not familiar with the colloquial contraction of the phrase "gets its ass"? Hence: "get's drunk."

I always imagined curved screens being the opposite of this. By curving up at the edges you'd protect the screen if dropped, you'd have the screen being the same distance away from a centrally placed eyeball, the further reach of the phone would be brought closer to your thumb, and the curve would fit better in the palm of your hand than a flat phone. Also, when you pull it out your pocket your hand would be on the back, rather than covering the front.

What's the point of having the screen curving away from you?

Which way do Samsung's screens curve?

Edit: found it. They curve inward:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24455312

That does make more sense to me. Though I'd still prefer a flat screen.

Apple is one of those companies who are always working on something or a thousand somethings and people jump to conclusions about what they are actually working on releasing. Do we actually have any real confirmation beyond that they are experimenting with these types of things?

How long have people been saying they are going to release a TV?
