Small Caps

So, in the CSS of an HTML, I can add the following:
Quote:
.smcap {font-variant: small-caps;}
And then get small caps if I use:
Quote:
<p><span class="smcap">text</span></p>
Has anyone had any luck with converting this to a MOBI file?

With Calibre, I believe it works.

The thing is the mobi format does not support smallcaps, so the converter program must transform the above into something like:

Code:
<p><small>TEXT</small></p>
and it gets trickier with mixed uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation.

Unfortunately, font-variant: small-caps isn't even supported by many ePub readers, but Amazon added font-variant: small-caps support in KF8.

To ensure that older Kindles will display small caps correctly many ebook producers fake small caps by applying different styles to the first letter and the remaining letters of capitalized text.

Peter Hatch came up with a very elegant solution, which you can find on his web site Extraordinary Commons.
