If Sony wanted to could it use 3rd party DRM
This might be a stupid question and it might be in the wrong category.
Besides Sony® not wanting to pay another company for the use of their DMR licenses is their any technical reason either Sony Connect on the PC or the Sony Reader could not handle DRM for stores other than Sony Connect? It seems to be that Sony® would sell more hardware if it could read people as many ebooks as possible. Heck I would even pay a few dollars to upgrade my Sony Connect to handle more DRM formats. Since I already have $$ invested in other ebook types. |

They do use a 3rd party DRM, actually, in the sense that they contract with another company to handle the DRM part of the equation, I mean.
They've already announced their intent to support DE, and presumably its DRM capabilities, so they may be thinking along the same lines you are, jckatz. |

Firstly, it's DRM, not DMR. Secondly, Sony does use an implementation of Marlin DRM, which was designed to be compatible across vendors and devices. The problem is that none of the other ebook vendors implements it so you can't exactly convert your books to anything else. Also, even if you succeed in transferring your license, it's unlikely the other device will not understand BBeB format...
I, for one, hope that efforts of Baen and TOR will make DRM obsolete. |
