Lightbulb Calibre Main program should update itself instead of prompting manual download

Most programs I used these day, including even simple ones, have an updater, which does the download if user wants to update to a new version. After that, it asks user if he wants to apply the update right away, then offers to close the program window and do the update automatically. This is much more convenient compared to having user do all of this manually, esp when programs have a new version every few days.

Please consider implementing this soon. Thanks.

No, plenty of programs work like Calibre for updates, assuming they ever have updates.
The other extreme is auto-update by big companies that don't even test.

I prefer the way Calibre works. Thanks Kovid.

In addition to concurring with the other replies, I'd add that Calibre's update cycle is very regular. Mr Goyal does remarkably well sticking very closely to a 14-day release cycle. That's not really "every few days" imo.

And you don't have to install every update. I usually update when there's something major or some feature I'm really interested in. Or when a bug was fixed that bothered me.

Sometimes I go a couple of months between Calibre updates.

I like that you can choose when to update.

I also prefer manual updating. I prefer to see if any bugs are reported in the latest version so I can try to avoid them.

I always check the "What's new" and the forum here.
Additionally if I'm in the middle of a project I will not update ereader Firmware, LibreOffice or Calibre or Calibre Plugins.
Even then I generally don't upgrade merely for features, but if there is a bug that could be an issue, I update. So I may skip versions. This also applies to the OS.

I even have a spare laptop and a spare PC and update one or the other if there is a major upgrade that might have issues. Similarly I have multiple websites and copies of them on my on premises server. I might only apply an update to one site at first.

Also I have separate data and entire system backups.

Thank goodness for manual / ability to disable, updates.

Not every system behaves. (Not every ereader device does either)

Not everyone want to lose a favorite feature or use of older (working) hardware that comes with some OS updates.

The fiasco with bad CC updates makes me that I did not have the Auto mode turned on.

And come on , how hard is it to do the Get Updates sequence .
Click the notification, click the Update button, wait for the download page to load. depending on your connection speed: <get a cuppa> or launch the update then go for the cuppa. Between having A Cable connection and a SSD, I can't make it to the kitchen and back before the task is done.

Of course, I did grow up with 300baud dial up, dot matrix printers and floppy only IBM PC so my tolerance for all this speed may be skewed

I have a "problem" with an auto-update in that it not just depends on one's connection speed BUT the SERVER's speed/allowance(?). I have updated Calibre where the download hovered 120 Kb/sec; I have also gotten an update from the same(?) default server at the 2 or 3 MB/sec. Recently, have stopped the very slow download from the default server & used the mirror with good "success" at the hight mega speed!

It is a hit or miss for download speed depending on the volume of connections? I do have a 800 mbps service (theorectically) from the ISP.

The main server has 2 Gbps bandwidth and is in London. Downloading from Mumbai on a 500Mbps connection, I get download speeds of about 160Mbps right now. That said, if you happen to do a download right after a release when there is maximum load you might need to use an alternate server.

Huh, luxury. My wife edited punched cards, ran program overnight.
I started with coding sheets and getting the result a fortnight later.
My first job location was using microwave links, but sudden information updates arrived on a thermal paper teleprinter using a 75 baud connection.

I was on dial up of 19.2K till December 2005, though a previous house in 1997 had 128 k ISDN. On 8 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up since December 2005.

I do install all new versions and can easily go back if needed because I do keep a bunch of MSI install files just to be safe.

Yes, of course one can go back. I just don't feel the need to update every time. I do read the "what's new" section every time a new update is released. But usually I find there's nothing really urgent I immediately need in the update.

I've gone more than half a year between updates. Not always, of course.
