Kobo Vox Battery

Am I crazy? I have been reading on certain threads that there are people saying that the Vox Battery is really good. I bought the Vox, and returned it largely because of the battery. I have the Kobo wireless and am used to not having to charge it for a few WEEKS. I understand that the Vox is more like a tablet, but what about the people that use Kobo primarily for reading? I don't want to have to charge my ereader every night...

From what I have read the Vox screen will use more energy then an e-ink screen, it is back lit LCD. No way around it. Evidently e-ink screens can hold the print as is without power just about indefinitely.
People pleased with the battery are probably coming from laptop reading. My Macbook gets 4 hours of heavy web surfing and about 6 hours if just reading. I have to plug it in every night before bed so would never even notice it an issue plugging in the Vox.
Did you like the screen image it presented compared to your Wireless when reading?

There are some things you can do to reduce battery usage if you are just going to read. Within the accounts and sync settings, uncheck Background data and Auto-sync. You can also set individual accounts there. Adjust brightness in the Display section of settings. Turn off wireless. There are probably other battery savers.

I don't routinely read on my Vox. I much prefer using my eInk device, the Kobo Touch. I was really surprised to discover this, btw.

The screen image on the Vox was another thing I didn't really like for reading purposes. I found the screen to be kind of hard on the eyes after coming from an e-ink screen, even after turning the backlight way down.

I almost never use the wireless but I still find the battery gets used up in no time. Lots
of people here have said they have at least six hours on one charge but there is no way
i'm getting that much time on mine.

I don't think Kobo hides the fact that the Vox will be charged every day. Kobo states that the Vox will get 7 hours with the wifi off. So I was pleasantly surprised when my tablet usually does fine on between 12 - 13 between charges.

Now, I don't use it continually throughout this time. But I keep the wifi on and I pick it up every few minutes/hours to browse or read. In my opinion, this is an excellent battery life considering what Kobo had me prepared for. If I do something a little different, like watch video, the battery drains pretty quickly. I also have to make sure I don't leave the Kobo app open or it won't go to sleep and it dies, but otherwise, the battery has been treating me very well.

Most days I use my Vox throughout the day as I need it and then after reading at night but before going to sleep I power down and plug in for the night. Easy-peasy.

My experience mirrors LauraPony's.

I, too, was surprised that a charge tends to last all day with casual use. Once you have everything set up, and have explored all the bells and whistles, your usage tends to drop somewhat, hence the all-day (12-13 hr) charge.

Did you by any chance find anything that would allow printing to any printer? Just curious. Thinking that it might be a usefull thing if it can.

If you are using the Kobo app you can go to the font settings and it will let you set "Nightime Mode" which is white letters on a black background, then if you set the brightness down, you will likely find it easier to read. That said, I don't read on the Vox, I use my Touch for reading.

AS far as battery life.

When I take the Vox to work and leave it on all day, sleeping after 10minutes with WIFI on, I can use it here and there all day then till about 6-7pm at nite before the dredded YELLOW battery warning. If I turn WIFI off when I put it down for any length of time, it will last until 8-10pm. Heck, most people I know with iPhones have to charge them EVERY nite too, and those are much smaller displays.

Considering that an LCD display has a backlight that uses up tons of power, it is not surprising that the e-Ink lasts much longer. An e-Ink display only uses power to change the text. Therefore, while you read a page, the display is not using power. The processor still uses power, but not the display.

I don't know if it's just me but I don't find the battery lacking at all. It lasts quite awhile before getting low. I've not properly timed it but I use it for so much more than reading. That said I'm quite used to plugging my blackberry in every night so it's nothing new.

Kobo wifi and its other sink bretheren don't use as much power as an LCD screen because it only uses battery power when changing pages. The vox's backlight and background programs make that impossible.

The battery on my Vox is horrid. I leave home with it in sleep mode and it is dead at the end of the day even if I never use the Vox. This is becoming a deal-breaker for me. I'm coming from a Nook, so I'm used to a backlit screen and the extra power demand. But my Nook would last all day with barely any battery depletion if I left it in sleep mode and didn't use it.

Do you leave your Wifi on while it sleeps? Do you use some of the apps like rdio and inq? All of these continue to try to update when you're in sleep mode, especially if Wifi is on. This will drain your battery. I believe there is a way to make sure the Wifi is off while sleeping. Others will be able to tell you exactly how!
