New Humble Bundle is up, and it has some really good stuff in it:
Humble Comics Bundle IDW Creator Showcase is chock-full of a wide variety of creator-owned titles across many genres, some of them award-winning. Fixed tiers of $1, $5 (more titles added next week), $10, and $18, with a bonus $25 level for a signed physical issue (shipping cost not mentioned yet). There's the excellent Comic Book History of Comics by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey available at the $1 level (I just went and ordered the paperback version of this a couple of days ago, when Chapters had a flash 20% off sale when buying with MasterPass, and still consider it money well spent) and you can read notes about their sources here on their website (sadly, they seem to have taken down the samples at some point in their redesign). Also, there are several volumes of the late Darwyn Cooke's (Wikipedia) Eisner-winning adaptations of Donald E. Westlake (Wikipedia) writing as Richard Stark's Parker mystery/thrillers, and it turns out there's a Little Nemo adaptation by Eric Shanower (Wikipedia) as well. These IMHO would be worth the price of admission just for their beautifully stylized art, even if they didn't also have solid stories backing them. And things like Locke & Key and a whole bunch more. Needless to say, this is an auto-buy for me. Again, a really brief descriptive blurb for some reason, so you'll have to go over to the actual page to see the contents. Quote:

Not a comic book, per se, but I'm sure that a large part--maybe the majority of the book-- is made up of comics. It's The Comic Art of War: A Critical Study of Military Cartoons, 1805-2014, with a Guide to Artists, by Christina M. Knopf.
The least expensive copy of it at Amazon is the Kindle version, for $19.99. Today, WarGameVault has the PDF (watermarked) as their Deal of the Day for only $7.49. Thankfully, they consider the day to end in a little over 18 hours from now, so you should have plenty of time to grab the deal before it ends. There are very few ratings for the book that I could turn up--not unexpected, given its specialized and scholarly subject and the fact that it was published only a couple of years ago. But the ratings that I did find were all 4's and 5's. Helpful links: WarGameVault's Deal of the Day webpage. Amazon's webpage for the book. |

Bargain @ $2.99 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (couponable/VIP-eligible at Kobo Canada but not in the US; price should be the same at the usual other retailers):
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel (Wikipedia), a best-of retrospective collection of the award-winning cartoonist's popular long-running strip. From the author of Fun Home -- the lives, loves, and politics of cult fav characters Mo, Lois, Sydney, Sparrow, Ginger, Stuart, Clarice, and others For twenty-five years Bechdel’s path-breaking Dykes to Watch Out For strip has been collected in award-winning volumes (with a quarter of a million copies in print), syndicated in fifty alternative newspapers, and translated into many languages. Now, at last, The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For gathers a “rich, funny, deep and impossible to put down” (Publishers Weekly) selection from all eleven Dykes volumes. Here too are sixty of the newest strips, never before published in book form. Settle in to this wittily illustrated soap opera (Bechdel calls it “half op-ed column and half endless serialized Victorian novel”) of the lives, loves, and politics of a cast of characters, most of them lesbian, living in a midsize American city that may or may not be Minneapolis. Her brilliantly imagined countercultural band of friends -- academics, social workers, bookstore clerks -- fall in and out of love, negotiate friendships, raise children, switch careers, and cope with aging parents. Bechdel fuses high and low culture -- from foreign policy to domestic routine, hot sex to postmodern theory -- in a serial graphic narrative “suitable for humanists of all persuasions.” |
