New Nook Firmware This Week
I came here to find out about the new nook firmware that is supposed to come out this week, but I do not see any news about it at all. A new firmware you say, well, that was the message that was on my nook Tuesday indicating that a new firmware was going to be released later this week. It was on my daily under the B&N Blog. I have now noticed it disappeared yesterday sometime and I have not heard chatter from anybody else on here and I wish I would have taken a pic of the screen because I do not remember all it said but I do remember it mentioning the nook would be faster and adding more features and unfortunately I do not remember the rest.
So did no one else see this but me? Maybe this is firmware update will be the one that brings games to the nook as referenced by B&N CEO on that Fox Business interview on the 12th. Last edited by javajoe96; 04-22-2010 at 05:46 PM. |

Also saw this from Gizmodo from the last friday, 16th, that was referencing that the 1.4 firmware would hit next weekand would have a full web browser. They do not say where they heard it from but it sounds more true now that we know a firmware update is coming this week, so I guess it is safe to assume it will be ther v1.4.

The firmware is already out, the link that you would use is **link removed since it's no longer open**
The good thing: books open up quicker, pages turn faster, dictionary now has a feature where I can type the word out rather than having to select it off the page. The bad: They did not add some of the desirable features like file browsing. The ugly: Word selection and highlighting are broken, completely. I can't select words beyond the first line of a page. Says login required. Anyone else was able to download it? Nook support section doesn't have a word about 1.3 yet, might be a pre-release.

Well, darn it, they locked down on that link quick, because that is how I was able to download it. I sure hope it's just a pre-release and not the actual thing. They really really need to fix that word selection feature because it's broken. |

If that is the case I'll downgrade back to 1.2, it's not a big loss.

yeah, I think it is v1.4 at least that is what is referenced in the Gizmodo story and they were pretty sure it was bringing a full browser, but who knows

just saw this on the barnes and noble community forum posted by user pitbull42
"I was just @ local B&N. Nook specialist at the store said the update will be out Friday. According to him, this is actually a major upgrade. The store has gotten promotional material to display tomorrow about the upgrade. He said there is a browser, but he said the browser is preset to go to e-book sites that offer free pre-1923 books for free. He said that Amazon has put up links on its Kindle site to access these sites, but you have to download and sideload. With the Nook, you just download just as you do now right to the Nook. He said the browser is not really set up for web browsing, just a few preset sites, like CNN, He said they are working on social networking site (facebook). They trying to get posts like what you are reading, lend book lists, and reviews to go up. Also he said this release will fix all the bugs and increase battery life. Also new type fonts will be available. Finally I was told B&N is doing a major ad campain starting tomorrow." Barnes & Noble Community Forums |

Hmmm... browser that goes to "free" book sites. My Alex came with that capability.

It is out and I just installed it. I sideloaded it because it was taking too long over WiFi. I will let you know my experience with it.

I sideloaded the update and everything looks like it went well. I don't really care about the games but page turning is faster and the wifi icon on the home screen is a welcome addition. I tried browsing with it and it might be good in a pinch but I don't think I'll be using it to buy books off kobobooks which was my original hope. Maybe if I can set a bookmark.
I'll report back after I play with it some more. |
