Doctor Dolittle in the Moon --- Told and Illustrated by Hugh Lofting (1886 – 1947)

This book was first published in 1928. Text and illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less.

The giant moth has brought the Doctor, Tommy Stubbins, Chee-Chee, and Polynesia to the Moon. As they explore this strange new world, the Doctor soon discovers how to communicate with the intelligent plants. But mystery lies all around – why were they brought here? – who is watching them? – who is the owner of the giant footprints they encounter? And how will they ever get back to Earth?

British author Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 – 26 September 1947) created the character of Doctor Dolittle, one of the classics of children’s literature. The Doctor first appeared in Lofting’s illustrated letters to his children, written from the trenches while he was serving in the British Army during World War I. The stories (a series of twelve books, the final two completed and published posthumously) are set in early Victorian England. The second in the series, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle (1922), won Lofting the prestigious Newbery Medal.

Despite the author’s obviously benign posture, the books became a target of controversy in the 1960’s amid accusations of racism and attitudes of colonialism, and went out of print in the USA for some time. Later editions in the 1980’s were bowdlerized to remove offending content and illustrations. The Doctor and the tales of his adventures are better known today through movie and television adaptations.

This ebook is based on text and illustrations from a scan of an unexpurgated US edition (1956 ?). Images of vintage cover, endpapers, and frontispiece from other sources have been added. OCR errors were corrected; punctuation, italics and diacritics formatted; illustrations manually cleaned and enhanced. To provide consistency throughout this series of ten books, punctuation and spelling were standardized. Embedded font used for titling.

Hi,

I noticed that you have no information on Hugh Lofting's sister-in-law, Olga Michael. She was born in Berlin, Canada, in 1902 and died in Sacramento, California in 1997. By that point, she was using her maiden name again, which is Fricker. Hope this helps (although doesn't help us getting the last two books anytime soon).

It is a sad thing that we must wait another 40 years for those two titles to enter Public Domain, but at least they are still in print and available.
