New Kindler from Oklahoma...

Hello everyone...As of Monday (assuming UPS comes through) I will have a Kindle 2 from Amazon. I bought immediately after the recent $40 price drop. One of my best friends has had a Kindle 1 for about 18 months, and I am looking forward to enjoying this. I read a variety of stuff, quite a bit of science and nature to support my nature photography hobby, a lot of history, especially military history and the history of exploration, and I am a long-time avid science fiction reader.

My Kindle is scheduled to be delivered on Monday, but UPS played with my heart a bit by (according to their tracking) bringing the package into Oklahoma City early Friday morning, and I was repeatedly checking "shipment tracking" all day long to see if it might be delivered Friday afternoon!

I am quite a gadget geek....I've used a Palm Treo Smartphone for several years and replaced it with the new Palm Pre this Summer, and I have a Creative Zen "media player" to listen to music and watch video while traveling (I travel by air about five roundtrips a year between my work and my hobby). I'd love to see a Kindle app for my Palm Pre similar to that for the iPhone, though I realize the screen would be much smaller and less satisfactory for reading.

I have lurked in the forum for a couple of days, and look forward to learning in a more overt way now, and eventually contributing my share. Thanks to the forum operators and mods for running the place!

It's here, it's here! Though the battery was fully discharged from sitting around at UPS all weekend--I had to plug it in and let it charge a few minutes before it would come to life. But I've purchased and downloaded (as a fast, easy, and cheap read) a collection of books by H. Beam Piper, a favored science fiction writer, and have been reading "Uller Uprising". Everything is working great, after a few minutes of paging through the included Kindle guide, I said the heck with that, and just started playing with menus and such. No problems at all (and I'm sure I just jinxed myself with that statement!).

It's amazing that it already contains several novels, has used only a teeny fraction of its capacity, yet is so small, thin and light! Easy to read, and paging is slower than I'd like, but I'm adapting by pushing the button as I start the last line, and holding it down till time to turn the page....Many adventures ahead, I am sure!

For a special treat, from the main screen: hold down "alt", hold down the caps button (the up arrow), and press "m". The K Guide doesn't mention that one!

Hi Kenny!

Uncultured furriners would say the smell never quite rubs off!

It's after Midnight, I've finished Uller Uprising, played with the web browser a bit, identified a book I'm going to purchase tomorrow (but will wait till then to purchase and download just to spread the thrill out), and it is past my bedtime.

So ends my first day of e-book adventure!
