I’ve actually been checking the page near daily for months now. I should have known I didn’t need to. Thanks Kieran! Like others, it’s the last one I needed, and since I don’t read anything out of order, I can finally consider starting this series.

New York Times-bestselling author Felix Francis is back with this thrilling adventure in the Dick Francis tradition.

A smartly-dressed man has been found unconscious at the local racecourse and is rushed to the hospital, where he subsequently dies. But who is he? Where does he come from? He had no form of identification on him, and no one claims the body.

Doctor Chris Reynolds, a specialist who treated the deceased—and who struggles with mental health issues—is intrigued by the nameless dead man, obsessed even, and starts asking questions. However, someone doesn't want the questions answered and will go to any lengths to prevent it, including an attempted murder. But when no one will believe that someone tried to kill Chris, the doctor is left with no option but to discover who the nameless man was and why he died...preferably before following him into an early grave.

Just FYI, it's no longer the most recent - that title now belongs to 2018's Crisis.

Cat Playing Cupid is a little more than 1/2 way through the Joe Grey series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I read and enjoyed several of the early titles in this series, but then somehow sort of forgot about the series. Not any particular reason, maybe just in my switch from DTB to ebooks? Maybe I'll try the series again...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NLL92S
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/cat-playing-cupid

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Excellent….These Joe Grey mysteries will stay popular for many years to come.”

Tampa Tribune

Kirkus Reviews says that award-winning author Shirley Rousseau Murphy has “raised the stakes of the feline sleuth genre.” In Cat Playing Cupid, Murphy’s fourteenth delightfully sophisticated whodunit to feature Joe Grey and his furry friends Dulcie and Kit, the feline P.I. is on a mission to stop a crime spree that endangers love on Valentine’s Day. The winner of seven straight Muse Medallions from the national Cat Writers Association, Murphy’s Joe Grey novels are the “cat’s meow”—as doggone good as Rita Mae Brown’s “Sneaky Pie,” Carole Nelson Douglas’s “Midnight Louie,” and Lilian Jackson Braun’s The Cat Who...books.

The Burglar in the Library is the 8th in the Bernie Rhodenbarr/Burglar series by Lawrence Block. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Titles in this series don't go on sale very often, so I'm happy to see this one...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SEI1FO
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...in-the-library

Spoiler:
Quote:
Bookseller and New-Yorker-to-the-bone, Bernie Rhodenbarr rarely ventures out of Manhattan, but he's excited about the romantic getaway he has planned for himself and current lady love Lettice at the Cuttleford House, a remote upstate b&b. Unfortunately, Lettice has a prior engagement—she's getting married . . . and not to Bernie—so he decides to take best buddy Carolyn instead. A restful respite from the big city's bustle would be too good to waste. Besides, there's a very valuable first edition shelved in the Cuttleford's library that Bernie's just itching to get his hands on. Did we neglect to mention that Bernie's a burglar?

But first he's got to get around a very dead body on the library floor. The plot's thickened by an isolating snowstorm, downed phone lines, the surprise arrival of Lettice and her reprehensible new hubby, and a steadily increasing corpse count. And it's Bernie who'll have to figure out whodunit . . . or die.

James Ellroy's The Black Dahlia is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon.

A number of Ellroy's books (Clandestine, the Lloyd Hopkins trilogy) regularly go on sale. But the big guns: L.A. Confidential, The Big Nowhere, White Jazz and The Black Dahlia are much rarer to find at a bargain price.

Quote:
Based on a notorious, unsolved Los Angeles murder case, the central drama of this hard-boiled mystery--set in the late 1940s--begins when the body of Elizabeth Short, an engagingly beautiful and promiscuous woman in her 20s, is discovered in a vacant lot, cut in half, disemboweled and bearing evidence that she had been tortured for several days before dying. Dubbed "The Black Dahlia" by the press, the victim becomes an obsession for two L.A.P.D. cops, narrator Bucky Bleichert and his partner, Lee Blanchard, both ex-boxers who also are best friends and in love with the same woman. Despite a huge effort by the department, leads seem to go nowhere, and Bucky is mortified when he inadvertently helps to suppress evidence--the apparently innocuous fact that a woman he spends many nights with, casually bisexual Madeleine Sprague, daughter of a crooked real-estate tycoon, knew "the Dahlia" and slept with her once. Bucky begins to fear for his future, but slowly and dangerously, he learns that his is one of the tamest crimes of corruption committed by the many people he knows. Building like a symphony, this is a wonderful, complicated but accessible tale of ambition, insanity, passion and deceit, with the perfect setting of booming, postwar Los Angeles.
Incidentally, anyone have any idea what "Cover Price Includes $ .50 F-P-T Amount" means?

Like many of the booksBnimble authors, Tony Dunbar's books go on sale/free fairly regularly, so I don't post many of them any more.

If you haven't already picked up most of the titles in his Tubby Dubonnet series though, you may be interested in Tubbypalooza, which per the blurb, contains 9 of the 10 titles in the series so far. This includes six early, Big-6 published titles (presumably with rights reverted) and three later booksBnimble published titles. Missing, again per the blurb, is Tubby Meets Katrina, which was published by yet a third publisher, who apparently isn't cooperating with the rights. Tubbypalooza is free right now at Kindle US, so it's a great way to (almost) complete the series if you are missing a few titles.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KNH8DNM

Spoiler:
Quote:
MURDER IN THE BIG SLEAZY: Destination crime fiction with a heaping dose of Étouffée

A simple man with a refined palate, maverick New Orleans lawyer Tubby Dubonnet has a penchant for fishing, Old Fashioneds, off-track betting, and fighting evil while passing a good time. Passing a good time, of course, includes running from the mob, solving gritty crime lab murder mysteries, thwarting hurricane season bank heists, and a good deal of rubbing elbows with corrupt politicians—all this while answering to a family of beloved women that he just can’t seem to slip anything past… And with each action-packed adventure, you can trust—because this is a Tubby Dubonnet mystery—that these disparate events are intricately intertwined.

A veritable best-of, this murder mystery anthology includes nine of Tubby Dubonnet’s Anthony and Edgar-nominated hard-boiled legal thrillers.

(Editor’s Note: Why not all ten? Sorry to say the rights to TUBBY MEETS KATRINA are licensed to another publisher. But these stories need not be read in order.)

CROOKED MAN

Meet lawyer Tubby Dubonnet. His clients are all renegades from the asylum (aka Orleans Parish), including Darryl Alvarez, the manager of a local nightclub who's been caught unloading marijuana from a shrimp boat. At their first meeting, Darryl entrusts Tubby with an ordinary-looking blue gym... of money. What could possibly go wrong?

CITY OF BEADS

Tubby Dubonnet is bored. Sure, researching licensing law for the new casino will keep trout meunière on the table, but what could be more tedious? (Unless, of course, the client’s dealings are steeped in conspiracy).

TRICK QUESTION

Medical lab janitor Cletus Busters is caught red-handed in a restricted area with the frozen head of Dr. Whitney Valentine. Busters won't say much, except that he's innocent. Calling Tubby Dubonnet!

SHELTER FROM THE STORM

To out-of-town kingpin Willie LaRue, Mardi Gras seems the perfect time for a New Orleans heist. Parties, parades, chaos, alcohol – who could be concerned about a little thing like a bank job? Indeed, all might have gone well except for an out-of-season frog-flogger that threatens to flood the French Quarter.

CRIME CZAR

Tubby can't forget the last words that escaped an old friend's lips, and he can't get out of the way of a political campaign that's turning rough. Obsessed with the idea that a shadowy crime boss may be pulling the strings that have cost good people their lives, Tubby is entering into a test of courage with the most violent men in New Orleans.

LUCKY MAN

It's a city of sin. And murder is only one of them. So what if Judge Hughes shared a few special moments with Sultana Patel—why is this a matter of public interest? Until the D.A. hatches a plot to ensnare them—and their lawyer Tubby. And what a web they’re ensnared in!

NIGHT WATCHMAN

When in the 1970s a young war protester is killed in broad daylight on Canal Street, it appears that his murder will be forgotten. But a youthful Tubby chanced to see it happen, and the tragic event's haunted him throughout his life. Decades later, Tubby decides to conduct his own investigation. And stirs up a hornets’ nest.

FAT MAN BLUES

Ex-con Angelo Spooner is trying to start a legit business, but he just can’t catch a break. Just as his healing Holy Water, “Angelo’s Elixir” is about to go upscale, the sticky strands of the Big Sleazy’s tangled web of crime and corruption come running. What’s a law-abiding parolee to do? Hire Tubby Dubonnet, of course!

FLAG BOY

The set-up alone's enough to make you believe in the butterfly effect. Two acrobats burglarize a house; a sultan moves into a French Quarter mansion; a Mardi Gras Indian, in the wrong place at the wrong time, is wrongfully arrested; and our hero Tubby Dubonnet comes upon a double murder while paying a social call on the bayou.

Moved my follow-up to the front, but leaving the description/links for those who might be interested....

ADD: As I've started reading a bit further in, I've noticed a few things that could be edited out - the same rather distinctive adjective used in a couple of sentences not too far apart, a couple of reversed words, a missing apostrophe, etc. If this sort of thing is really going to bother you, be forewarned...

ADD: And even a little further in, there are quite a few of these little errors, enough that even I (fairly tolerant) may not finish, although it does seem as if the story is going to be cute/fun. Sigh!

So, it took me a while to figure this one out, but I think I have it now...

Carolyn Haines is pretty well known for her Sarah Booth Delaney/Bones series, but apparently also has written a romantic suspense series (mostly or all pub by Harlequin) under the pen name Caroline Burnes. This series features a black cat, Familiar, as the detective. And now, apparently, Haines has collaborated with some other authors on another series, which appears to feature another black cat, Familiar's son Trouble, as the protagonist/detective. And in this series, each of the authors writes a whole book at a time with Trouble as the lead, in different cities and situations. Whew!

This series is pub by KaliOka Press, which I haven't heard of before, but I have read and liked almost all of the titles in the Sarah Booth Delaney series, and also several of the Familiar titles, back in DTB days, without realizing that Burnes was the same as Haines. And I also checked out the sample and although I did notice a couple of typos, there are no huge glaring formatting problems with it, at least for me in my Chrome browser, so I'm assuming KaliOaka is not just a self-pub press. (If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will inform me ) Also, although this sounds to me like it could end up with some pretty jerky story lines between books, a couple of the comments I read on the omnibus indicate that it seemed to work, at least for the folks doing the reviews.

All of which is a long-winded way of justifying this post, letting you all know that an omnibus of the first five titles in the Trouble series, titled A Box Full of Trouble, is on sale for £1.54 at Kindle UK and $1.99 at Kindle US.

Titles include:
  • Familiar Trouble by Carolyn Haines
  • Trouble in Dixie by Rebecca Barrett
  • Trouble in Tallahassee by Claire Matturro
  • Trouble in Summer Valley by Susan Y. Tanner
  • Small Town Trouble by Laura Benedict
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Box-Full-Trou...dp/B07DN2QRPH/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DN2QRPH

Spoiler:
Quote:
FIVE times the Trouble -- When Trouble the black cat detective is on the case, mystery, mayhem, and a little romance are only a whisker away. Sleek, black and sometimes snarky, Trouble is the son of Familiar, another famous black cat detective, and fancies himself a feline Sherlock Holmes (the Benedict Cumberbatch version).

Trouble thinks with a slight British accent—and has one big attitude. He’s far smarter than the bipeds he helps with solving mysteries involving art thieves, arsonists, and murderers. And he’s more than astute in the ways of the humanoid heart.

Discover Trouble in this boxed collection of the first five books in the series.

Join writers Carolyn Haines, Rebecca Barret, Claire Matturro, Susan Y. Tanner, and Laura Benedict for five complete mysteries—and a lot of fun with a wise-cracking kitty. To meet Trouble is to love him…unless you’re the villain.

^^KaliOka is a self-pub press, as it seems you've figured out. But you had enough justification to link to the deal.
