Caution: they've changed something about the #5 book (Leper) -- it doesn't show that I've bought it. I have #1-#21, complete. Book #14 above did show that I've bought it, but #5 did not. Check your library!

Dark Tort is the 13th in the Goldy Schulz series by Diane Mott Davidson. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GCFBUG
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/dark-tort

Spoiler:
Quote:
Caterer Goldy Schulz's lucrative new gig, preparing breakfasts and conference room snacks for a local law firm, is time-consuming, but she's enjoying it . . . until the night she arrives to find Dusty, the firm's paralegal, dead. The deceased also happened to be Goldy's friend and neighbor, and now Dusty's grieving mother is begging Goldy to find out who murdered her daughter.

Just because the police are on the case doesn't mean Goldy can't do a little snooping herself. While catering a party at the home of one of the firm's lawyers, she just happens to overhear an incriminating conversation. She also discovers a few tasty clues in the kitchen. Before long, Goldy finds herself knee-deep in suspects. But one of them is incredibly dangerous . . . and very liable to cook Goldy's goose.

Death in the Dark Walk is the first in the John Rawlings series by Deryn Lake. It has dropped to $0.99 and £0.99 as a Countdown Daily Deal at Kindle US (approx. 6 1/4 more days) and Kindle UK (approx. 6 more days) respectively.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LCPHP29
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-Dark-...dp/B07LCPHP29/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Having just finished his indentures, Rawlings is celebrating in Vaux Hall Pleasure Gardens when he trips over the body of a young girl.

Summoned to the magistrate’s office as prime suspect, Rawlings not only clears his own name but impresses Fielding so much with his power of recollection that he is asked to investigate the crime. From gaming hell to fashionable house, Rawlings follows a trail of lustful liaisons and illicit intrigue which prove beyond a shadow of doubt that the girl has had quite a past … a past with threatening secrets.

Death in the Dark Walk is a richly atmospheric and compelling Georgian mystery woven around the real characters John Fielding, the phenomenal sightless magistrate known as the ‘Blind Beak’, whose Runners formed London’s early police force, and John Rawlings, the Apothecary reputed to have invented soda water.

Looking to the Woods is the fourth in the Paris Homicide series by Frédérique Molay. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US. I've read and quite enjoyed the titles in this series.

link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBKAYM0

Spoiler:
Quote:
When a ten-year-old girl’s mutilated body is found in a public park in Paris, chief of police Nico Sirsky takes action. But his elite team of homicide detectives isn’t on the case for even twenty-four hours before a second child is found murdered and left to rot inside a middle-school classroom. With the City of Light on edge awaiting another gruesome discovery, the clock starts ticking for Sirsky to catch the elusive killer who calls himself the gamemaster.

As the pressure mounts, Sirsky is also confronted with a conundrum in his personal life: his girlfriend is inexplicably pulling away from him. But he must once again put his own problems aside when the investigation turns up nothing but taunts from the killer. It will take an entire team of police psychologists, forensic specialists, and criminal investigators to uncover the truth hidden in a web of murder more tangled than any of them could have imagined.

Kobo US is having a $2.99 sale this weekend, good through Monday, Feb 4 (although Kobo's sales sometimes end early). Most are also VIP/couponable. The sales page has a group of Thriller titles and a Crime & Mystery group.

Most of the titles in the Collins & Burke series by Anne Emery are $2.99 each, including an omnibus of the first three titles, which works out to a pretty good price each if you need all three. Link: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/search?Qu...9&fcmedia=Book

Other authors I recognize with one or more titles: Lee Child, Michael Crichton, Jack Higgins, Carl Hiaasen, Ruth Rendell, Marco Vichi, an omnibus of Albert Campion titles by Margery Allingham, Ellery Queen, George Bellairs, James Ellroy, Dorothy L Sayers, Peter James, Ellis Peters (Felse), Patricia Wentworth, Charlaine Harris (Aurora Teagarden), Anne Perry, Quentin Bates, William Deverell, and John McFetridge.

Sixteen titles by Michael Jecks have dropped to £0.99 each at Kindle UK, mostly titles in the Puttock/Furnshill Knights Templar series, but a few others, including a couple of non-mystery historical fiction titles. If I remember correctly, many of the later titles in the Knights Templar series have been on sale a few times before, but this selection leans heavily towards the earlier titles in the series.

I'm not going to type out 16 titles - here's a link for them all. Just go take a look if you're interested in Jecks' books. I picked up two titles I've waited for for a long time, so I'm happy.

A Dead Man in Malta is the last of seven titles in the "Dead Man in..." series by Michael Pearce. It has dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK.

As I've mentioned before, Pearce is one of my top five favorite mystery authors, and this series features Sandor Pelczynski Seymour as a somewhat unusual British policeman (with language skills - !!! - from growing up in the East End) who is commandeered by Special Branch and sent to trouble spots around the British Empire in the years leading up to WWI.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01J1WM852

Spoiler:
Quote:
Malta, 1913, and hot air balloons hover over the Grand Harbour. One of them comes down in the water but no one is hurt - except that the balloonist dies later when taken into the Naval Hospital for a check-up. But he is not the only one who had died there unexpectedly, as a letter to The Times points out, and a special investigator, Seymour of the Foreign Office, is sent out from London to find out what is going on.

For in 1913 Malta is still a British protectorate, governed by the British; indeed, with its red postboxes, English beer and English language it seems like an exotic Little Britain. But the rumblings of war are reaching out to that small island in the Mediterranean and many of the old Maltese families are becoming divided in their loyalties: at the same time staunchly supportive to the British and yet starting to question Malta's subordinate status and wondering whether the time has come to strike out an independent path for themselves.

So the letter to The Times has touched a raw nerve, as Seymour soon finds out: is it a critique of bad nursing practises? Or is there a different, more sinister explanation to these sudden deaths?

Also, the first title in this series, A Dead Man in Trieste, is available for only £2.99 (or $0.99 in the US, if you are willing/able to travel) if you prefer to try the first in the series first.

Two mysteries are among the US Kindle Daily Deal, which tends to be heavy on romance and sci-fi, and (usually) not so much on mysteries.

One False Move, by Harlan Coben, Myron Bolitar series #5, $1.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/One-False-Mov...dp/B000SEIDPW/
matched at Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/one-false-move-8
Spoiler:
Quote:
She's smart, beautiful, and she doesn't need a man to look after her. But sports agent Myron Bolitar has come into her life—big time. Now Myron's next move may be his last. . .

Brenda Slaughter is no damsel in distress. Myron Bolitar is no bodyguard. But Myron has agreed to protect the bright, strong, beautiful basketball star. And he's about to find out if he's man enough to unravel the tragic riddle of her life.

Twenty years before, Brenda's mother deserted her. And just as Brenda is making it to the top of the women's pro basketball world, her father disappears too. A big-time New York sports agent with a foundering love life, Myron has a professional interest in Brenda. Then a personal one. But between them isn't just the difference in their backgrounds or the color of their skin. Between them is a chasm of corruption and lies, a vicious young mafioso on the make, and one secret that some people are dying to keep—and others are killing to protect....

Fallout, by Sara Paretsky, next-to-most-recent in VI Warshawski series (2017), $1.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Fallout-V-I-W...dp/B01J16P3D2/
for price check, not matched at Kobo US, as of now: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/fallout-50
Spoiler:
Quote:
And now SARA PARETSKY returns with the most extraordinary novel of her legendary career: FALLOUT.

Before there was Lisbeth Salander, before there was Stephanie Plum, there was V.I. WARSHAWSKI. To her parents, she's Victoria Iphigenia. To her friends, she's Vic. But to clients seeking her talents as a detective, she's V.I. And her new case will lead her from her native Chicago... and into Kansas, on the trail of a vanished film student and a faded Hollywood star.

Accompanied by her dog, V.I. tracks her quarry through a university town, across fields where missile silos once flourished — and into a past riven by long-simmering racial tensions, a past that holds the key to the crimes of the present. But as the mysteries stack up, so does the body count. And in this, her toughest case, not even V.I. is safe.

Exciting and provocative, fiercely intelligent and witty, FALLOUT is reading at its most enjoyable and powerful.

The Brass Go-Between is the first in the Philip St. Ives series by Ross Thomas, originally written using his pen name, Oliver Bleeck. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, matched (and coupon/VIPable) at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008E58LJK
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-brass-go-between

Spoiler:
Quote:
First in the series from an Edgar Award–winning author of “stylish, well-told suspense novels enlivened with a dash of wit” (The New York Times).

Philip St. Ives is the kind of man who can convince a vice cop and a paroled mobster to sit down to a hand of poker. Once he was a reporter with a daily column, a fat Rolodex, and a reputation for indifference to criminal behavior. Now he is a go-between, a professional mediator between thieves and the people they rip off. For arranging the recovery of a stolen necklace, painting, or child, St. Ives takes ten percent of the ransom. His work takes him across the globe, but more importantly, it pays his alimony.

An African warrior’s shield has come to Washington, where a gang of art-minded burglars pluck it from the museum. They demand $250,000 for the return of the priceless artifact, and request that St. Ives make the hand-off. But when he goes to deliver the cash, he finds himself playing a more deadly game than five-card draw.
