OTOH the default Get Metadata (MDE path) offers a lots smaller choice to choose from

The plugin is completely configurable as to what searches are done. The ones included are just examples. And they are fairly old now. But, I don't see a cover search in the included searches. Did you add one?

But, for covers, I am usually getting them through the metadata download. If there is a match, then one of Kobo, Smashwords or the Kindle hi-res covers seem to be the best. Google is probably the next and then it is whatever seems to be OK.

I thought this thread was a discussion about how to better organise calibre Tips and Tricks posts, and that it culminated in a decision that the MR Wiki be used.

But the thread itself seems to have morphed into place to post and discuss Tips and Tricks, IMO that's a retro grade step from having threads such as [Editor] Saved Search/Regex Functions and [Library Maintenance] Plugboard, template, and custom composite column recipes

This thread is not just to talk about how to organize them in the wiki, but also to post tips too for those who don't feel comfortable adding them to the wiki directly. If links to the two forum threads you listed are not already in the wiki page, they should be.

Yes they are there - but similar threads, such as the Viewer CSS 'recipes' are not there.

IMO if we post multiple tips and ensuing discussion in here we will fail to meet the OPs major issue:

That its hard to find things in the existing 'Tips and Tricks' threads (e.g. the Plugboard, template, and custom composite column recipes thread in Library Management) because there is no index, or if there is it is incomplete, and discussion on different tips often gets entangled.

One of the problems I have with the other "tips and tricks: forums is that specific tips are buried in discussion about a tip which obscures the actual tip.

I would suggest an ordinary thread be started for each tip and after any discussion is ended the mods be asked to move the finalised tip to the sticky.

Suggestion - we ask the Admins to create a Tips and Tricks sub-forum with a set of prefixes. Pros: keeps everything in the Calibre Forum, one thread per tip, the sub-forum filter options would obviate the need for a separate index, search can be limited by prefix etc. Mods can move a thread into the T&T forum. Cons: need to define a set of prefixes.

Questions: a) what prefixes might we have, b) what to do with the existing 'tips and tricks' threads -- close them with a reference to the new T&T sub-forum, dissect them into separate threads in the T&T sub-forum

The whole point of the wiki page is to make the tips easy to find. The forum isn't good at that.

If the tricks and tips aren't in the wiki how will anyone find them in there. To date none of the calibre mods has put there hand up to maintain a calibre tips and tricks wiki.

And why on earth dies it have to be a mod. The whole idea is ANYONE can add to and change the Wiki.

Do you usually barge in the middle of conversations without reading what came before and then tell everyone it it won't work because you have no imagination of how we already solved that problem?

Of course there is nothing in the page, we just created it, there hasn't been time to add much to it yet. Have a little patience, and quit telling the people doing the work that it can't be done. :-P

On Windows, a shortcut to calibre.exe can be added to the Send To menu (Win+R, shell:sendto). Any files you send to Calibre will be added to the library.

Because I'm data centric and mouse averse, I use sendto a lot.

You can modify the column icons in Calibre's appdata folder (cc_icons folder). Sorting the list should refresh it from disk. I sometimes do this to fix the transparency or swap an icon with a better one.

I find the wiki topic very interesting.
I have an index of various topics and tricks of Calibre, but I have it with photos and in Spanish. I leave you a sample.
