Review
''Before his death in 2004, an ill Manchester asked former Cox newspapers journalist Reid to take his research notes and finish writing the final volume of his trilogy. The long-delayed majestic account of Winston Churchill's last twenty-five years is worth the wait . . . Manchester (and Reid) matches the outstanding quality of biographers such as Robert Caro and Edmund Morris, joining this elite bank of writers who devote their lives to one subject.'' --Publishers Weekly (starred review)

I did scan through the first couple handfuls of reviews of the Kindle edition, looking for comments about the maps/figures issues that have been mentioned for some other Pen & Sword books, but didn't see any. Doesn't mean they aren't a problem - just that the reviews I looked at don't mention them. And in the sample there is a family tree figure that looks okay too - not great, but definitely okay.

Still $1.30 at amazon US.

Quite a few of the maps and figures are quite good for a contemporary e-book and quite a few are at least OK. The first few maps aren't all that good, but the rest are above average for e-books and are reasonably decent. The multi-page "Chronology" and "List of Consuls" tables are margin cropped scanned images with poor contrast making them more uncomfortable to read than necessary. The family tree diagram is much better than the tables, but could have been better. I haven't seen other Pen & Sword books, but I'm guessing this is more than a step up.

A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman is $1.99 today as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US. I haven't read any of her books, but the blurb indicates that one of her other titles, The Guns of August, won a Pulitzer Prize, so I'd expect good things from this one too. Note: the blurb also indicates that this version does not have color images.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Distant-Mirro...dp/B004R1Q296/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Barbara W. Tuchman—the acclaimed author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning classic The Guns of August—once again marshals her gift for character, history, and sparkling prose to compose an astonishing portrait of medieval Europe.

The fourteenth century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering age of crusades, cathedrals, and chivalry; on the other, a world plunged into chaos and spiritual agony. In this revelatory work, Barbara W. Tuchman examines not only the great rhythms of history but the grain and texture of domestic life: what childhood was like; what marriage meant; how money, taxes, and war dominated the lives of serf, noble, and clergy alike. Granting her subjects their loyalties, treacheries, and guilty passions, Tuchman re-creates the lives of proud cardinals, university scholars, grocers and clerks, saints and mystics, lawyers and mercenaries, and, dominating all, the knight—in all his valor and “furious follies,” a “terrible worm in an iron cocoon.”

Praise for A Distant Mirror

“Beautifully written, careful and thorough in its scholarship . . . What Ms. Tuchman does superbly is to tell how it was. . . . No one has ever done this better.”—The New York Review of Books

“A beautiful, extraordinary book . . . Tuchman at the top of her powers . . . She has done nothing finer.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Wise, witty, and wonderful . . . a great book, in a great historical tradition.”—Commentary

NOTE: This edition does not include color images.

With Kindle books a lot depends on the device to which the book is being delivered and the format used. I looked at the sample in two different formats, KF8 (azw3) and KFX, both downloaded using Kindle for PC. I compared the total file size of the sample and the size and resolution of the JPEG images that make up the List of Consuls. The images in the KFX version were noticeably clearer with fewer artefacts and are likely closer to what the publisher originally provided.

The KF8 version was 1.4MB and the images were 932x1117 (126KB), 789x1340 (119KB), and 1638x444 (110KB).

The KFX version was 12.3MB and the images were 1252x1500 (1.2MB), 1031x1750 (1.2MB) and 1638x444 (330KB).

These are pretty good and undergo zooming--significant zooming--on my F10 without degradation.

I don't see poor quality here.

Weird mix of free academic titles

Academic publisher De Gruyter has a strange set of academic books available for free at Barnes & Noble, Google and eBooks.com. The copyright page says they're under a Creative Commons license:

Quote:
This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 License, as of February 23, 2017. For details go to http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/.
You can't sell them or create derivative works, but you can give them away to others.

Unfortunately, eBooks.com doesn't allow ordering a search by price, but Barnes &Noble does. Google Books allows setting the search to specifically return free Google ebooks.

eBooks.com does have the books available as typeset PDFs. If you want the books in PDF and it's worth the effort to you, you can browse one of the other searches and copy-paste the ISBN into the eBooks.com search bar. Google has PDF ("scanned pages") listed for the books, but for some reason, the ones I checked are just epub conversions like you'd get out of Calibre.

I spot-checked five at Amazon. Three were regular price, one was free and one wasn't available as an ebook.

The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt by Toby A. H. Wilkinson has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US as part of the Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US. I'm a big Egyptophile, so this looks pretty interesting. It gets 4.2 starts on Kindle, which is not too bad.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Magisterial . . . [A] rich portrait of ancient Egypt’s complex evolution over the course of three millenniums.”—Los Angeles Times

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
The Washington PostPublishers Weekly

In this landmark volume, one of the world’s most renowned Egyptologists tells the epic story of this great civilization, from its birth as the first nation-state to its absorption into the Roman Empire. Drawing upon forty years of archaeological research, award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson takes us inside a tribal society with a pre-monetary economy and decadent, divine kings who ruled with all-too-recognizable human emotions. Here are the legendary leaders: Akhenaten, the “heretic king,” who with his wife Nefertiti brought about a revolution with a bold new religion; Tutankhamun, whose dazzling tomb would remain hidden for three millennia; and eleven pharaohs called Ramesses, the last of whom presided over the militarism, lawlessness, and corruption that caused a political and societal decline. Filled with new information and unique interpretations, The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt is a riveting and revelatory work of wild drama, bold spectacle, unforgettable characters, and sweeping history.

“With a literary flair and a sense for a story well told, Mr. Wilkinson offers a highly readable, factually up-to-date account.”—The Wall Street Journal

“[Wilkinson] writes with considerable verve. . . . [He] is nimble at conveying the sumptuous pageantry and cultural sophistication of pharaonic Egypt.”—The New York Times
