Any ongoing work on the epub specification?

I ask because I just peeked in at the IDPF forums (http://www.idpf.org/forums/), which seem to be moribund: no real activity since 2008. Yet there's much that could be done: support of footnotes, some real page layout possibilities (beyond the CSS page-break-* things), and perhaps more. Epub looks far from finished to me, so where's the activity?

I couldn't agree more. Once OPS 2.0 was finalised interest seems to have vanished. The current standard can't even handle columns on anything other than a rudimentary basis.

Much of the problem is that Adobe and its device partners have had a hard time getting a fully-conformant Reading System out the door. The latest desktop version of ADE doesn't even fully comply with the limited OPS2 spec, and the situation on embedded devices is worse.

As usual, things will continue to stagnate until there's competition to shake them up. This is why I'm hoping that Apple's implementation will provide an injection of innovation. If they want to render magazines and newspapers to an acceptable standard then they'll have to.

Right now IDPF is fixing bugs in the current spec and then there will be another revision. It is certainly far from finished. IDPF forums are not used much because everyone is on mobileread ;-)

What's happened to Nate's project to propose a standard for ePub dictionaries?

The real problem is that it's all concerned with the existing spec. OPS 2.0 was finalised in September 2007 and is closed to new features. I see no evidence of moves to start a new cycle to extend the spec and fill in all the missing abilities that ePub requires. The discussion about headers and footers is worth a read - the current framework basically has no solution for the issue and it was dismissed.

It's also not at all clear what action is being taken to fix the minor amendments that are being discussed. For instance, on 14 Dec 2009 it was proposed that the playOrder attribute in NCX navLists be made optional. Yet it is still required in the spec. What gives?

This was from their last meeting which happened to be yesterday (3/17). Not sure all of what it means. But sounds like they are working on a updated spec.
