Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God (32 pp) by Jonathan Edwards

Edwards delivered the sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", a classic of early American literature, during another wave of revival in 1741, following George Whitefield's tour of the Thirteen Colonies.

Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 - March 22, 1758) was a preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans. Edwards is widely acknowledged to be America's most important and original philosophical theologian, and he's considered one of America's greatest intellectuals. Edwards's theological work is very broad in scope, but he is often associated with his defense of Reformed theology, the metaphysics of theological determinism, and the Puritan heritage. Recent studies have emphasized how thoroughly Edwards grounded his life's work on conceptions of beauty, harmony, and ethical fittingness, and how central The Enlightenment was to his mindset. For example, Edwards was genuinely committed to the promotion of gender equality. His interest in Eve has been interpreted by scholars as an indication that he harbored proto-feminist views:

Edwards played a very critical role in shaping the First Great Awakening, and he oversaw some of the first fires of revival in 1733-1735 at his church - First Church - in Northampton, Massachusetts.

The International Standard Version (ISV) is one of the newer English translations of the Bible. The New Testament was published several years ago; the Old Testament was published just recently.

According to the translation team, the translation tries to strike a balance between being literal (word-for-word) and idiomatical (which I understand to mean sense-for-sense).

I've done a little perusing of the New Testament part, and also done some other vetting of it. I have some reservations about the whole translation project and ISV Foundation, under whose auspices the translation was made. But, I think that the translation itself is a solid one--for one thing, it was made by a committee (this is very important--some translations are made by only one person) of scholars with good or better credentials. It has very high ratings at Amazon and GoodReads (at Amazon there are ratings only for the complete Bible, Old and New Testaments).

The first three Doon series books (the fourth is due in August) by Carey Corp are on sale for $.99 each. I tend to like YA fantasy and thought I'd give them a try, but I don't know anything else about them. They're published by an imprint of Zondervan and billed as Christian fiction, but according to the reviews, they aren't that Christian.

The MacArthur Bible Handbook is $3.99 and I don't recall seeing this one on sale before. It's essentially the book introductions and summaries from the MacArthur Study Bible and the MacArthur Bible Commentary without the verse-by-verse commentary, so it's probably not worth it if you have one of those.

Frankly, this topical Bible is not going to take the place of others, like Nave's. But it might have some things in it that the other topical Bibles don't. And, it's impossible to beat the price that this one has on it right now.

I got an email message (a sponsor advertisement, I think that they call it) from Rose Publishing about this. In my opinion, somebody is being a little bit deceptive. If you get Olive Tree's free program, you can install this same Bible Study Bundle for free anyway. It's one of page after page of free books that you can get once you get the program.

One nice thing about Olive Tree (at least now) is that you don't have to have a tablet or smartphone (anymore) to be able to download it and install it. So, I got it recently. I already have three or four Bible programs and really didn't want to add another one, but Olive Tree's free book offerings were just too compelling.

WordSearch (maybe it's "WordSearchBible") is another Bible program that offers a huge number of freebies (215, the last time that I checked). But, frankly, it looks like their freebies are not quite the quality that the free offerings by Olive Tree are--they tend to be older works (probably most are in the public domain) and the newer works tend to be less popular than Olive Tree's (this is also true of their not-free books).

Thanks for post. Unfortunately, there is not a dedicated Bible study software forum or thread at MobileRead, that I'm aware of. Your post spurred me to bring up some things that some MobileReaders might not otherwise learn at this website.
