Atwood's Oryx and Crake under a Buck!

Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood, is on sale for 99 cents in the Kindle store. This title is the follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale, which is still on sale for $3.95 (there are two editions; I linked in the one that I have, as the newer edition doesn't even have a publisher cover image; both are the same price, if someone wants to sample both and report any differences). If you want to read more of the series, The Year of the Flood is now out as well, and currently $8.69.

Book Description

Margaret Atwood's classic novel The Handmaid's Tale is about the future. Now, in Oryx and Crake, the future has changed.
As the story opens, the narrator, who calls himself Snowman, is sleeping in a tree, wearing a dirty old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beautiful and beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. In a world in which science-based corporations have recently taken mankind on an uncontrolled genetic-engineering ride, he now searches for supplies in a wasteland. Insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the Pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is Snowman left with nothing but his bizarre memories — alone except for the more-than-perfect, green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster? He explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes — into his own past and back to Crake’s high-tech bubble dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief. With breathtaking command of her shocking material and with her customary sharp wit and dark humor, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable space populated by characters who will continue to inhabit your dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers.

From the Inside Flap

A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize

Margaret Atwood?s new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it.

This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. For readers of Oryx and Crake, nothing will ever look the same again.

The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

With breathtaking command of her shocking material, and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable realm populated by characters who will continue to inhabit our dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers.

$0.99 (US) at B&N too! Thanks for the tip. It was on my wishlist, now it's on my Nook.

Yep, that's the link where it says "You can get the same price on this for the nook, HERE. " at the bottom.

*ahem*

Not a single one of the Amazon links is available in Canada. Perhaps the [GEO RESTRICTION] banner ought to be added to the thread? Given that Margaret Atwood is unabashedly Canadian?

(B&N is no help: they refuse to sell Nooks or e-books to Canadians ... even when the author lives a few blocks away!!!).

And, never mind that Handmaid's Tale isn't even available in Canada as an e-book at Amazon or Kobo for any price.

At least Oryk and Crake is available at Kobo for 89¢ : http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/Oryx-...VIQ/page1.html

@SensualPoet: Handmaid's Tale is available to Canadians from the Sony ebook site. Not cheap, but available.

Great deal, thanks (but I don't believe the novel is a follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale).

P.S.--The book is also available to Canadians for .99 from the Sony store. (Enjoy!)

Good for those who can get it... but I agree with tench, there is no connexion between The Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and crake, except that they are both stories of a dystopian future. And both very good books.

I'm still waiting for The Year of the Flood to be available at a reasonable price...

Price went back up at B&N also. I can't check the Kobo price -- it's apparently a canadian only title.

Still 89 cents in Canada @ Kobo. 99 cents in Sony store, too, for the version published by Random House of Canada.
