Kindle DXG International - Browser restrictions removed by changing address

Hello,

Since short I have a Kindle DXG, while living in Belgium it isn't possible to use my Kindle DXG to browse wikipedia and etc this due to the browsers restriction.

Lately I've read an article on downloadsquad.com explaining that books cost different in different countries due to the roaming costs. But Amazon's public statement was that there can be a price difference but not due to roaming costs. Also that the wireless is complete free and included with the DXG

The trick to get the lowest costs was to change you're living address to an address in Canada.
I've tested this and by surprise, surprise; I can surf on my Kindle, all the functions are working perfectly.

Now I just want to be sure that I don't get a bill from Amazon for the roaming costs. So I've disabled my wireless.
So the question is, does anyone uses this simple hack and what are you're experiences?

Thanks for the answers

If you buy a book and get it delivered via 3G, they notice you're using 3G outside Canada, and soon get an email like

Quote:
I see that you attempted to purchase ... while in a different country than Canada listed on your Amazon account. Certain Kindle titles are not available everywhere. We are reaching out to you to ensure the best possible service for your account.

If you have moved to a different country, you can easily update your country for your Amazon account at www.Amazon.com/manageyourkindle

If this is not the case, and you would like to share information that you live in Canada, we can be reached ... Helpful information includes:
– Passport
– Military ID
– Permanent Resident Card
– Driver’s License
– Other state photo identity card

...

Pascal: Thanks for the information, I also send an email to Amazon with the question but formed a little different
I've didn't mention that I've changed my country and the question goes about the charges (roaming).

When I've received an answer, I will let you know.

Update: I've got an answer for Amazon.

Quote initial question:
Last I've received my ordered Kindle DXG. And I have a issue with the wireless connectivity.
A colleague of mine also has a Kindle DXG and he can't use the browser due to area restrictions. He can't use any online services except for the Amazon Store.

On my Kindle DXG I can surf without any problem. So I've read the user agreements and there I can find that the wireless connectivity isn't free, that this is only free for the Amazon shop. This wasn't stated on the Kindle DXG order pages nor in the manual included in the package.

Qoute amazon website:
General. Amazon provides wireless connectivity free of charge to you for certain content shopping and downloading services on your Device. You may be charged a fee for wireless connectivity for your use of other wireless services on your Device, such as Web browsing and downloading of personal files, should you elect to use those services. We will maintain a list of current fees for such services in the Kindle Store. Amazon reserves the right to discontinue wireless connectivity at any time or to otherwise change the terms for wireless connectivity at any time, including, but not limited to (a) limiting the number and size of data files that may be transferred using wireless connectivity and (b) changing the amount and terms applicable for wireless connectivity charges.

So I have 2 questions:
- Can I use my wireless connectivity without costs?
- In case there are costs, I would to see a price list for this and I would wish on an option to disable this without disabling my wireless connectivity to the Amazon Shop!

ATTENTION: I'm talking about the Kindle DXG, this Kindle doesn't have WiFi connection. So I am talking about the GPRS or 3G wireless connnection.

Could you please provide feedback as soon as possible. I don't want to receive a huge bill for roaming costs or etc.

Answer from Amazon on the initial question:
Hello,

Your wireless Whispernet connection is free and included with your Kindle purchase. There's no wireless set-up, no confusing service plans and no monthly wireless bills.

Shopping and downloading from the Kindle Store is free. So is accessing your Archived Items on Amazon.com and Kindle's Basic Web that allows you to browse and search on the Internet.

Some extra services, such as conversion and wireless delivery of personal documents, carry a charge of $0.15 per megabyte of content you submit for conversion. To avoid a fee, or if you're not in wireless range, you can send an e-mail to "name"@free.kindle.com and download the files via USB in a Kindle compatible format to the devices.

Internet access using the Web Browser through Whispernet is not available in most countries outside the United States when using your Kindle's 3G connection, however most customers can access Wikipedia. These restrictions do not apply when accessing the Web Browser over a Wi-Fi connection.

And to be sure, I've send the following email as reply:
Thank you for your swift reply.

To confirm:
- Only documents send to username@kindle.com will be charged and delivered to your device
- data transferred when using the basic web browser is free and included with the purchase of a Kindle DXG

When I receive an answer, I'll post it here. So for the moment fingers crossed

Eventually, you will get into trouble, if your Kindle stays registered to Canada, and you use the belgian 3G for downloading purchased Kindle books. In that case, Amazon KNOWS they delivered the device to a belgian adress, and wants to see PROVE that you moved to Canada.

If you switch your account to Belgium before purchasing and only switch it back to Canada after synchronizing with your Kindle, Amazon still can get suspicious (they pay the 3G bill, and most certainly do check accounts registered to a country with no 3G traffic in that specific country and lots of traffic "abroad". This would be the case if you are not regularly in Canada, using the Canadian 3G, so amazon sees you are using your SIM only in Belgium, and registered it to Canada.

Eventually, they could close your account, because it's illegal / not compliant with their TOS.

In fact, you already have the answer: it's free in the US and in some other countries, but in most of the countries outside the US, it's not available.

They for sure CHECK the 3G ROAMING BILLS they pay!

But why not give it a try: buy a Kindle Edition with your canadian account, and have it delivered via 3G in Belgium: it takes less than 24 hours before you recieve an email as I quoted earlier, I bet my pants on that!
