Religion, cults, conspiracies, and unreasonable brand devolution (to any brand; this happens a lot in the gaming world). It's all just different sides of the [same oddly shaped] coin.

Might be a little more interesting if they had done more general research to see what else causes activity in those areas of the brain... any tech head at a shiny new gadget, a collector of anything gazing at an extremely rare item etc. etc. Now that would be more interesting and may prove something other than a possible preconception by only using Apple products...

You clearly think that Apple is taking advantage of the average consumer here, and maybe they are. But then again, maybe the average consumer is willing to trade off greater expense and lack of choices in return for simplicity and convenience.
I can read and write in cursive, too.

Maybe we should have Apple sell etch-a-sketches as iPAD 3s, a la Dilbert.

I doubt that your "average consumer" would know the difference.

My complaint is not for simple machines for lazy people, but the continuing mantra that "this is the best, this is the best" to people who have even a tiny amount of expertise. It isn't, by a long sight.

I suppose I shouldn't complain about Steve Job's using P.T. Barnum's motto...

This is one of the oddest posts I've seen in a lot of time. Just about everyone now uses digital cameras, and guess what, they use some kind of memory card. Most of the smartphones, tablets, and ereaders available now use some type of memory expansion. I think the average user is a lot smarter than you want to let on.

Most consumer-level users that come into my work's multimedia lab don't care about their SD card even if their device has one. The slot goes unused or remains filled with the card that came with it. The exception being serious amateur photographers/videographers.

It has already been mentioned. Apple set the bar, the others followed - not realizing that they didn't enjoy the (being politically correct here) brand name to pull such high margins.

While we're off-topic, let me mention that Android will only make inroads on the tablet market when it is considerably cheaper than Apple, while offering the same or better specs.

Isn't "serious amateur photographer/videographer using a smartphone camera" an oxymoron?

The bestselling phone (iPhone) doesn't.
The bestselling tablet (iPad) doesn't.
The bestselling eReader (Kindle) doesn't.
Somehow this doesn't seem to have affected their success.

Are you suggesting that iPhone, iPad and Kindle owners don't own digital cameras - as per the sentence preceding the one you quoted - and thus have never had to deal with SD cards?

The success of those devices doesn't alter the point being made that most average users of consumer devices will have come across SD cards and not been unduly confused by them.

Most of the models available might have them. Do most of the units sold? Not for tablets, certainly.

And digital cameras only have SD card storage.
The user interface complication does not come from it being an SD card, but from having multiple different storage options.
Again, I'm not saying it is rocket science, what I am saying is:

Is it complicated for anyone who is even vaguely familiar with a computer? No. Is it more complicated that the current iPad interface? Hell yes.

Graham

I have an iPad-I don't own a digital camera
My sister has an iPhone-she doesn't have a digital camera
For a lot of folks-especially younger ones-their phone IS their digital camera.
I would say that techno-sohispicates and serious photographers know SD cards and understand that they come in different flavors, etc. But that's not the average phone user.

I have a library of many images arranged in category for my college studies and it is so ridiculous that I can't browse them without placing them in same sync folder and without support of subfolders AND 10GB image library occupies 20GB of my device space. It's frustrating not being able to use my device for that.

For android? It's as easy as copying it from one place to another.
