This occurred with the series featuring the detective who is my favorite. The manga Detective Conan was translated and brought the U. S. with the title changed to Case Closed (due to legal issues). While not well known in the U. S., according to Wikipedia it is one of the biggest selling manga in Japan.

While I'm not a great detective fan, my favorite detective is Conan Edogawa (real name Jimmy Kudo). He's a high school student who, due an experimental poison, was physically transformed into a child. Despite being a brilliant detective (so much so that the Police were calling on him in to solve their cases), looking like a child definitely hinders him since no one takes him seriously. Plus, he has to keep his true identity secret or the people who poisoned him will come back to finish the job.

The series features some humor (usually involving Conan's situation) but there is rarely humor when it comes to the crimes themselves (which often involves tragic situations) many of which would be suitable for an episode of Law & Order.
