How to disable automatic updates on kindle?
I have a Kindle Paperwhite 3 on 5.8.9.2 and I want to eventually jailbreak it but since its currently impossible(is it?) Im looking for a way to prevent Amazon from automatically updating it. Can someone give me a solution other than keeping it on airplane?

Methods for blocking over-the-air (OTA) updates are discussed in the Kindle Developer's Corner sub-forum. One method is described in step 7 of the first post in this thread.
The recommended method has changed over time because Amazon tries to prevent this type of update blocking. There has not yet been an update released for 5.8.9.2 and so it is not yet known whether the current update blocking method will turn out to be effective for that firmware. It's perhaps worth noting that turning WiFi off will roughly double the Kindle's battery life. Unless you have some specific need for WiFi, such as syncing multiple devices, you may as well just leave it off and avoid the whole issue.

Both suggestions have their own merits:
Airplane Mode (HT): That is certain to stop any updates being sent to you. Blocker directory name (JH): Not as certain (on 5.8.9.2) but lets you use Wifi connections. So you get to choose, it just depends on how you normally use the Kindle and its Wifi connection to Amazon (some features require the connection). Note: If your Kindle has 3G, it will use 3G for the connection to Amazon if the Wifi service is disabled but it will not download an update file over 3G. So in this case, you can have your cake and eat it too. Last edited by knc1; 06-26-2017 at 09:30 AM. |

You can create empty folder in the root folder, and name as "update.bin.tmp".

The current directory (folder) name is: update.bin.tmp.partial Exactly as entered on the above line, no other extension on that name and place it at the top of visible USB storage (alongside /documents). It would do no harm to create both directories. |

Sorry, you are right, it should be "update.bin.tmp.partial". Btw, I used this method since version 5.6.x until now (5.8.9.2). All is working fine (Oasis, PW3, and Voyage).
