Robert Ames Bennet: Thyra, 12 Jul 2009
This 1901 sf thriller is a bit like Burroughs' Land that Time Forgot' complete with prehistoric monsters and a subhuman race in a vast, deep pit at the North Pole (ERB's was a cliff-surrounded island Caprona near the South Pole). As with Caprona, the heat in the polar region came from volcanic and related sources. A major element of the book is an isolated Norwegian civilization that set out from Iceland in the 10th century and thrived in the warm polar pit.
