hm, yes and no. that's definitely one important reason for a margin, and probably the only reason most ebook readers care about. but a margin is also important to give some "white space" to the text, which allows your eye to circulate more easily and improves reading comfort (also, more white space gives a more classy and "luxurious" feel to a layout ; cheap books use small margins partly because they can fit more text on fewer pages, and pay for less paper. with ebooks we don't have to worry about paying for paper, we can have "luxury" on every book. ). so if i *can* allow myself a somewhat wider margine, because i have a larger screen to take advantage of, i'm very happy to do so. in that case percentage makes sense. especially since i was making my epubs with about a 10-15px margin for a while ; i'm starting to find that too small now, but i still make relatively small margins because a 6" screen is not that wide. if one day i'm reading these same books on a larger screen i'll be very happy to see wider margins. (i know that some people would find 10px already too wide).

The "right" margin probably depends on the screen size, orientation, text size, and bezel size/shape. There has to be a minimum margin (1mm?) plus something proportional to the text size (1em?), but that is never more than some percentage of the screen width or height (5%?). But elaborate formulas like this cannot be coded with css

i am sure you can figure out some kind of crazy css hack to take every factor into account. i'll just wait for you to post the code in the epub code snippets thread.

It could be possible when ePUB supports the CSS3 calc function

I hope not - as then we'd never be sure that a page would ever finish rendering!

Sigil as an editing tool

I have converted an odt file to epub with calibre.

I still have one small problem, I would like to know how to edit/correct by myself using Sigil.

Question: How to center a small image?

In the attached file, I have for example a small image stuck to the left of the screen in index_split_000.xhtml -only one page, you can't miss it

Kovid said in one post : " most epub viewers dont resize images to fit in the viewable area. calibre's epub viewer just got that feature recently. As for centering a more robust way to do it is
Code:
<div style="text-align:center">
<img>

I don't understand a single word. Could please somebody center this image so that I can copy the code and reuse it later?
Attached Files
File Type: epub Revue Hispanique - Marion.epub (106.3 KB, 445 views)

Instead of
<div class="P-P2">
<div class="G-fr"><img alt="" class="calibre2" src="../Images/10000000000000F0000000F0161D9331.jpg" /></div>&nbsp;
</div>

you might use:

<div style="text-align:center">
<img alt="text" src="../Images/10000000000000F0000000F0161D9331.jpg" />
</div>

It should be possible. Sigil will still read and store some information onto the computer, but the install folder is self-contained. That is, you don't need anything else but a copy of everything in it to run Sigil*.

*The computer needs to have the VCredist libraries installed. Most already have them, but if the computer on which you want to run Sigil doesn't, see the FAQ.

All of this assumes you're running Windows.

Angry SIGIL - Won't Install Mac OS X 10.6.8

Hi, I read that you need at least OS X 6 to install this software. I have 10.6.8, yet after downloading, there is a "slash" though the icon with an error: "You cannot open the application because it is not supported..."

Is there an older version of this I should try and install?

Thanks.

Please avoid using 2 year old threads for questions.

The official Sigil documentation states 10.7+ is required (although there is a problem with this that should be fixed in the next release). And you may find on another thread a version compiled to work on 10.6.
