.... And today there's an Ellen Datlow edited collection of Lovecraft homages written by Neil Gaiman, Joe Lonsdale and others for $1.99 as an Amazon deal of the day.

Amazon

For those of you wanting an ePub edition of Lovecraft's Monsters, your best bet seems to be buying at Kobo, and requesting a price match, where the store credit should bring the price down to $1.79. Strangely, Google has two editions priced at $4.68 and $7.99.

Today's Monday afternoon special from Open Road features 6 titles by Robert McCammon.
  • Gone South
  • Mine
  • Mystery Walk
  • Stinger
  • The Wolf's Hour
  • Usher's Passing

All are $1.99 -- except Gone South, which is $2.99 -- and should be available at all the usual places (Amazon, B&N, Google, Kobo, Apple).

Alas! $7.99 again.

I'd like to see the miniseries they did in the seventies.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist is currently 99p at amazon.co.uk.

Never read the original book, but the Swedish language movie adaptation is an outstanding piece of modern horror.

Quote:
He is a twelve-year-old outsider; bullied at school, dreaming about his absentee father, bored with life on a dreary housing estate. One evening he meets a mysterious girl. As friendship blossoms between them, he discovers her dark secret - she is a 200-year-old vampire, forever frozen in childhood and condemned to live on a diet of fresh blood.

The inspiration behind the major feature film, Let the Right One In is a disturbing and brilliant reworking of the vampire legend, and a deeply moving fable about rejection, friendship and loyalty.

Alas, not on sale in the US.

I saw a stage adaptation of it last month. They did a very good job. If it comes around, I'd recommend seeing it.

Bargain @ $2.99 from Sourcebooks Landmark in Canada & presumably the US (couponable/VIP-eligible @ Kobo, price should be the same in all the usual stores):

The Girl from Rawblood by Catriona Ward (ISFDB), a gothic historical literary horror novel with f/m romantic elements which won the 2016 British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel. Apparently it was up against a Tim Lebbon novel, and he already has 4 BFAs and a Stoker, so a pretty good showing for what seems to be a debut novel.

Winner of BEST HORROR NOVEL (August Derleth Award) at British Fantasy Awards 2016

For generations the Villarcas have died mysteriously, and young. Now Iris and her father will finally understand why. . .

At the turn of England's century, as the wind whistles in the lonely halls of Rawblood, young Iris Villarca is the last of her family's line. They are haunted, through the generations, by "her," a curse passed down through ancient blood that marks each Villarca for certain heartbreak, and death.

Iris forsakes her promise to her father, to remain alone, safe from the world. She dares to fall in love, and the consequences of her choice are immediate and terrifying. As the world falls apart around her, she must take a final journey back to Rawblood where it all began and where it must all end...

From the sun dappled hills of Italy to the biting chill of Victorian dissection halls, The Girl from Rawblood is a lyrical and haunting historical novel of darkness, love, and the ghosts of the past.

It's $2.51 at Amazon (US). The reviews (from people that received ARCs!) are a bit brutal. But what the hell, I picked it up anyway.

I saw the Swedish film then read the book. I thought it was a classic example of a great film from a poor book.

Disappearance at Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay is currently $1.99 at all the usual places.

Spoiler:
Late one night, Elizabeth Sanderson receives the devastating news that every mother fears: her thirteen-year-old son, Tommy, has vanished without a trace.

The search isn’t yielding any answers, and Elizabeth and her young daughter, Kate, struggle to comprehend Tommy’s disappearance. Their feelings of helplessness and sorrow are compounded by anger and frustration: the police have uncovered no leads. The two friends who were with Tommy before he vanished may not be telling the whole truth about that night in Borderland State Park, when they were hanging out at a landmark the local teens have renamed Devil’s Rock.

Elizabeth is unprepared for the strange events that follow. She believes she sees Tommy’s ghost in her bedroom, while Kate and other residents claim to see a figure peering through their windows at night. Random pages torn from Tommy’s journal begin to mysteriously appear—entries that reveal an introverted teenager obsessed with the phantasmagoric; the loss of his father, killed in a drunk-driving accident a decade earlier; a folktale involving the devil and the Borderland woods; and a horrific incident that Tommy believed connected them all.

As the search grows more desperate, and the implications of what happened become more sinister, no one is prepared for the shocking truth about Tommy’s disappearance at Devil’s Rock.
