Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, the grandson of a serf who had bought his own freedom, and died of tuberculosis in 1904, a renowned doctor, playright, writer of hundreds of short stories, and friend of Leo Tolstoy.

Some of his stories contain brief put-downs of his fellow Russian authors. Many of them expose the dreadfull poverty, injustice, and class distinctions in the Russia of his time. Almost every story is about emotional relationships between men and women.

The short stories included in this ebook are: The Lady with the Dog, A Doctor's Visit, An Upheaval, Ionitch, The Head of the Family, The Black Monk, Volodya, An Anonymous Story, and The Husband.

The text for this ebook was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the print version on the Internet Archive. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics, diacritics, and scene breaks, used British English, and made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.

Thanks, you're very welcome.

Two problems though: I'm afraid I neglected the check the date of death of the translator, Constance Garnett, and as she died in 1946 the books won't be in the Public domain until the end of the year. And I'm going to take a break from Chekhov anyway; I find him quite depressing.

I've started on a different author (who died in 1867, so copyright is safe) and won't get back to Chekhov for several weeks.
