Are you running windows firewall? If so, turn it off, it probably doesn't allow outgoing connections via the SMTP email ports.

Hi all,

I finally got around to implementing the long promised email support in calibre. As of 0.5.3 you can click a button to mail books to your kindle and have calibre automatically mail downloaded news to it as well. The email support is not kindle specific, so you can use it to email yourself books as attachments and access them on any device that lets you read email and has an ebook viewer.

To set it up, start the preferences, go to "Email delivery", and type in a From email address (all emails sent by calibre will appear to come from this email address). Then just add as many To email address as you want and calibre will mail books to all of them. Once that's done, click the little arrow next to the Send to device button to actually email a book.

calibre will normally try to send mail to the destination address directly from the computer it is running on, but if this doesn't work (because the destination email service only accepts mail from "well known" mail servers), you can also have calibre use your mail server to send the mails.

Of course all these features are extremely beta, so YMMV.
YAY! I know what I am doing tonight! Hopefully all of the bugs will be worked out (thanks daffy)!

Some email servers do not accept email messages from a "relay". This probably looks like a relay to various servers since your from address domain isn't correct for your IP address. (Or something.)

Turned off the firewall and got the same error message.

I tried the "calibre-smtp -vv from@whatever.com to@somethingelse.com "test email"" with a non-kindle address and got the following (I don't think my ISP likes Calibre)

EEK! So your ISP is "assuming" that because you are sending email from your PC that your are sending bulk or unsolicited email. Nice of them to "assume" that you are doing bad stuff.

I think calibre is going to have to support using an external SMTP server that you can point to, such as your ISP's or other SMTP server.

I should correct something, it's not my ISP (Verizon) it's the service that hosts my website and personal email addresses that doesn't like Calibre.
