One Hundred Days: Napoleon's Road to Waterloo by Alan Schom

Napoleon was the hero of his age, a man who helped France become, briefly, a hugely impressive European power. In 1814, he was imprisoned on Elba, planning an escape and plotting his course of action once he had done so. From the time he landed back in France to his loss at Waterloo, one hundred days elapsed.

Scholar Alan Schom, an expert in the history of the Napoleonic era, outlines the key personalities and events of those hundred days in 1815. Napoleon is a far cry from the heroic leader of the time before he was imprisoned in Elba, attempting to gather forces and convince his old friends to help him once again.

Despite the difficulties he faced from his irresponsible brothers, and acting in opposition to the statesman Talleyrand, Napoleon was only a whisker away from a famous triumph, and only eventually defeated by the mobilised force of the Allies.

Joan of Arc by Edward Lucie-Smith

Joan of Arc was one of the greatest figures of the Middle Ages - a woman who has fascinated historians ever since.

From her sudden arrival on the pages of history, in the spring of 1429, to her humiliating execution at the stake in Rouen in 1431, Joan of Arc achieved astonishing feats that changed the face of the Kingdom of France.

The standard biographies of Joan do not give her a human face: she is a witch, a whore, a saint or a warrior, bound up in myth and legend.

Edward Lucie-Smith’s aim was 'to listen to all the witnesses - to Joan herself, to those who knew her, to the chroniclers who recorded her career, to those who preserved fragments of information about her in other documents, such as the royal accounts, and to try to construct from their testimonies a convincing portrait'.

Dylan the Bard: A Life of Dylan Thomas by Andrew Sinclair

Fifty years after his death, many consider Dylan Thomas to have been the greatest lyric poet of his age...

In this biography Andrew Sinclair explains how Thomas attracted a new mass audience, and discusses the influences on his work that stemmed from the divisions and tensions of the poet’s Welsh heritage.

Sinclair captures the tragic and exuberant story of Thomas’s personal life, his vision of Wales and the writing of his masterpiece, Under Milk Wood, the brawling and boozing in Fitzrovia during the 1930s and 40s, and the last American tour of the 50s, that ultimately ended with his death.

First published in 1999 by Constable and Company Limited

Andrew Sinclair is a novelist, historian, critic and filmmaker. He was a Founding Member of Churchill College, Cambridge, and has taught and travelled across the world. New Grand Tour by Godfrey Hodgson

The great European cities that made our world…

Godfrey Hodgson includes ten sketches of European cities, each of which has contributed something to the ferment, the still dangerous brew of European civilization.

Each will have something, even if only a distinct and rich way of life of its own, to contribute in the future

Each essay reflects upon what moves and intrigues the author about the history, literature, politics, past and future of the city and the flavour of its way of life.

First published 1995 by Viking

Godfrey Hodgson was a White House correspondent for a London newspaper with a desk in the Washington Post newsroom during the Kennedy and Johnson years. He has worked as a reporter for print and television throughout the United States and has written sixteen books

Kidder's The Soul of a New Machine, $2.99

Tracy Kidder's Pulitzer Prize winning The Soul of a New Machine, written back in 1981 about the attempt by Data General to produce a better 32 bit minicomputer than its competitor Digital Equipment is on sale for $2.99 at all the usual suspects. Kidder had inside access to the development teams during that development. I read it when it came out, and as a developer for another computer company, also going through the pains of developing a next generation computer that was incompatible with the predecessors, I found it quite compelling. I haven't reread it (so I'm not sure whether the suck fairy got to it), and I'm debating whether to pick it up as an ebook. It was quite interesting view of both the developers and managers as they were going the the trials and tribulations of developing a new computer system. It's not particularly technical.

Sicily: An Island at the Crossroads of History by John Julius Norwich has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I haven't read this title, but have read a couple of Norwich's other books, and enjoyed them.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Sicily-Island...dp/B00RKO6N0U/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sicily-11

Spoiler:
Quote:
Critically acclaimed author John Julius Norwich weaves the turbulent story of Sicily into a spellbinding narrative that places the island at the crossroads of world history.

“Sicily,” said Goethe, “is the key to everything.” It is the largest island in the Mediterranean, the stepping-stone between Europe and Africa, the link between the Latin West and the Greek East. Sicily’s strategic location has tempted Roman emperors, French princes, and Spanish kings. The subsequent struggles to conquer and keep it have played crucial roles in the rise and fall of the world’s most powerful dynasties.

Yet Sicily has often been little more than a footnote in books about other empires. John Julius Norwich’s engrossing narrative is the first to knit together all of the colorful strands of Sicilian history into a single comprehensive study. Here is a vivid, erudite, page-turning chronicle of an island and the remarkable kings, queens, and tyrants who fought to rule it. From its beginnings as a Greek city-state to its emergence as a multicultural trading hub during the Crusades, from the rebellion against Italian unification to the rise of the Mafia, the story of Sicily is rich with extraordinary moments and dramatic characters. Writing with his customary deftness and humor, Norwich outlines the surprising influence Sicily has had on world history—the Romans’ fascination with Greek civilization dates back to their sack of Sicily—and tells the story of one of the world’s most kaleidoscopic cultures in a galvanizing, contemporary way.

This volume has been a long time coming—Norwich began to explore Sicily’s colorful history during his first visit to the island in the early 1960s. The dean of popular historians leads his readers through the millennia with the steady narrative hand of a master teacher or the world’s most learned tour guide. Like the island itself, Sicily is a book brimming with bold flavors that begs to be revisited again and again.
