Also reported on the BBC website here in the UK, but it doesn't make any comment about what it'll do with regards developing an international market for the Nook.

I'm struggling to see how this makes sense for MSFT. Will the Nook migrate to Windows? Will MSFT sell its new tablets in B&N stores? Google and B&N seem a much better fit since the Nook is currently Android.

I see this deal having two benefits:
-helps to keep the Nook and hence epub alive
-If W8 is really going to be on the Nook this gives Microsoft another and most importantly lower price point at which to sell "limited capability tablets"

MS wins (bragging rights) if B&N drops android for its hardware.
B&N wins because a Win8 Nook can tie to the Microsoft Zune music and Video services and XNA games and *instantly* gain more and better apps than they've been able to round up on their own.

Win8 already has Kindle (and Blio) incoming so adding Nook gives Win8 users a choice of ebookstores. Plus, because the college bookstores are included, MS gains a toehhold in the academic retail world for Win8.

For MS this isn't about ebooks, its about the platform.
The price is cheap.

Several of their rivals (Apple, Google, Sony) are already operating in the ebook space. It's a competitive move.

If Microsoft makes its own tablet, maybe. But normal B&N stores are pretty much doomed if the Nook gets spun off.

All the more reason for Microsoft to throw B&N a $300 million lifeline.

Forbes doesn't think this will work for MSFT. But maybe...

Microsoft was an early entrant in the ebook world, so this marks a return.

I think this move is the first step in MSFT taking over the Nook business. The reason? Its countering Apple's own long game in the ebook market- a long game focused on the education market.

IMO, neither Apple or Microsoft care beans about the low price, low profit mass market genre ebook- they care about the education market.

MSFT (phone, pc, tablet, xbox)+B&N+Netflix > Amazon or iTunes

This is how Microsoft becomes relevent in the tablet/content delivery space.

That brings to mind another question: if the Nook Tablet were to switch to Windows, wouldn't Barnes and Noble /"Newco" have to pay license fees to Microsoft to run Windows? It was my impression that manufacturers could run Android for free.

My point is that we might not see a Nook Tablet running Windows for reasons of limiting cost, unless/until Nook is further separated from Barnes and Noble financially.

MS entering any field usually means less competition. The video game and ebook markets have thus far been exceptions to that rule, although I find the early reviews of Win8 somewhat discouraging. Everything points toward them moving to even tighter control over computing as a whole.

It is a similar deal that Microsoft did with Nokia, with a similar goal: to get their product on devices. Basically, find a company that's struggling, give them a lifeline with cash and say you have to use Windows.

This deal can possibly work out better for B&N than it has for Nokia. It all depends on how Win8 works on tablets.

There is free and there is free.
Android is freely available but selling Android-based hardware incurrs its own licensing fees. As is, Microsoft makes more money off Android than WinPhone 7.
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...to-wake-up.ars
Part of today's deal is that B&N will pay MS royalties for their android use.

With MS looking to promote WinPhone and Win8 they're offering adopters special deals, so going to Win8RT for a hypothetical MetroNook would cost less than sticking with android.

There's a lot more going on than meets the eye here.
