I read that book last year and gave it 3/5. For 0.99 it's good but otherwise you can afford to skip.

A nickname, sure. The CIA is a good example. The CIA isn't literally called The Company.

Featuring a villainous company in a story and having it named The Company (or The Corporation, The Corp, etc.) is a trope that comes off as lazy and unrealistic to me.

Any nefarious company is going to have an army of highly paid advertisers and spin doctors working for it and is going to have a name, logo and mascot to hang their brand on.

Evil company? Sure.

Evil company that calls itself The Company? Come on man.

And the name would be something warm & fuzzy, like Momcorp in Futurama...

Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock is $2.99 on Amazon.com, US only
Quote:
The mystery of Ryhope Wood, Britain's last fragment of primeval forest, consumed George Huxley's entire, and long, life. Now, after his death, his sons have taken up his work. But what they discover is beyond what they could have expected. For the Wood is a realm where myths gain flesh and blood, tapping primal fears and desires subdued through the millennia. A realm where love and beauty haunt your dreams—and may drive you insane.
This is the first book in a trilogy, but I usually only hear about this one.

Thanks for that. It sounds similar to Raymond Feist's Faerie Tale, which I enjoyed. Though it looks like Mythago is more of a fantasy and Faerie Tale played up the horror aspects.

Fantasy and Faerie, yes. Horror, not so so much. I *highly* recommend it. Also the rest of the series (there are 7 total).

The classic Tales of the Dying Earth by Jack Vance is $2.99 at Amazon.

Quote:
Jack Vance is one of the most remarkable talents to ever grace the world of science fiction. His unique, stylish voice has been beloved by generations of readers. One of his enduring classics is his 1964 novel, The Dying Earth, and its sequels--a fascinating, baroque tale set on a far-future Earth, under a giant red sun that is soon to go out forever.

This omnibus volume comprised all four books in the series, The Dying Earth, The Eyes of the Overworld, Cugel's Saga and Rialto the Magnificent.

Three Neal Asher books are on sale at Amazon.com for < $4. But beware: I already had other e-versions of these from Amazon. I really like the fact that Amazon usually stops me from buying something I already have. Perhaps it is due to a change in publisher?

It uses the ASIN. If the number changes for any reason, you will get no warning. Open Road often changes the number when they do discounts. If a new edition of a book comes out, it will have a different number. Changing of publisher would result in a different number.
