new device from news group/Murdoch bandied about

it slices, dices! and delivers videos! and news and videos and social networking and you can read on it and it's in color!

so, is this another tablet, or is there really such an adaptable reader in the works?

"News Corp. receives a little more than a third of the $14.99 monthly subscription fee Amazon.com charges for The Wall Street Journal,"

wow, that's not much!! No wonder they are getting behind their own product. IMO 5 years from now we'll have generic color touch tablets running linux which will be able to plug into anything. Similar to how 'generic' DVD players are - we are just waiting for tablet technology to improve.

I think that what we'll have in five years is laptop-on-a-stick---an appstore-esque OS with your apps, media etc. on a memory stick that you can plug into a netbook shell, ebook reader-sized media screen or even cell phone and use interchangeably. On the go? Plug it into your phone and there are all your ebooks, music, contacts etc. Then when you get home, plug it back into your netbook and resume your music, books etc, exactly where you left off.

AFAIK the major effort is to develop a software format that will work cross-platform. I doubt they will actually make their own device. Most likely is they'll develop something for Adobe Air that will work on tablets, portable devices and computers.

I concur that magazines get a bit of a raw deal on the Kindle. I wasn't quite blown away by the Kindle magazine experience -- it wasn't bad but I concur that the Kindle really isn't made to replicate the "paper magazine" experience.
