4/5 for Mordecai's Ashes a very competent debut. Looking forward to book two. Now onto Irrevocable Trust, book 6 in the Sasha McCandless series by Melissa F. Miller

Finished Fahrenheit 451. Glad I reread it, there were some profound things in that book I missed as a teenager.
Now, to continue my high school classics trend, onto reading Of Mice and Men. I'm kind of itching to read a long book soon though. |

Only just started Wanderers, Kings, Merchants: The Story of India through Its Languages by Peggy Mohan, but already 5% in it's looking good - a popsci book that leans heavily toward sci rather than pop. Some interesting analyses of creoles have set the tone for what's to come, I hope.

Finished Of Mice and Men. Now to pick between trading Anne of Green Gables or Lonesome Dove for my next book.
EDIT: Anne of Green Gables won because Lonesome Dove has a 2 week hold at the library. Looking forward to reading this! This is probably my 6th public domain ebook from https://standardebooks.org/ and I am in complete awe at how nice their formatting is. Last edited by spacepope; 01-24-2022 at 08:53 AM. |

4.25/5 for Wanderers, Kings, Merchants: The Story of India through Its Languages
Popsci that is at least 80% sci, a good read. The weakest parts of the book for me were the some times strained attempts to lighten the tone, the "pop" parts, and some of the political asserttions. Language and politics are inseparable, of course, but at times the presentation of the author's own political pov felt a bit jarring juxtaposed with quite densely academic writing on what might be called forensic linguistics. Those minor niggles aside, it was overall a thoroughly satisfying and challenging read. Now on to something MUCH less dense, Lonesome Lake by Lesley Appleton Jones |

I’ve started The Private World of Ottoman Women by Godfrey Goodwin and am hoping it gets better, as right now it’s not particularly insightful or nuanced. But there’s a chance it will improve once he gets to personalities and stops making jejune generalizations.
OTOH, I’m on the verge of abandoning Death of a River Guide by Richard Flanagan. Other than the stuntishness of the central conceit (life passing before the eyes of a drowning person) this is really just a sweeping family saga. I hate sweeping family sagas. I’ll give it one more shot; according to my Kobo I’m 25% into it. |

Next up: The Ebb Tide by Robert Louis Stevenson & Lloyd Osbourne. His tenth novel, and second collaboration. I hope it's better than The Wrong Box. |

The ORIGINAL originals were the radio episodes, and I think some of the inconsistency in later books especially was in large part due to the fact that the author had outgrown the whimsicality of the very early episodes. For me, the first 3 books remain strong favorites, with the last 3 less so. One thing that remained consistent was his remarkable near-prescience about technological developments that didn't become reality until decades later.

First Test by Tamora Pierce Her first in the Protector of the Small series.
This has an engaging feel to it. The various characters are lively and relatable. However, I felt there needs to be more depth to the overall story telling. I didn't feel the seriousness of the situation or the chauvinism. Perhaps, because the book is only about 150 pages there was missing development. The ending battle scene was glossed over too quickly and cleanly. The author may have purposely done this so as not to disturb young readers. I will continue with series. Too much lacking to rate higher than a C [3 stars]. |

4.25/5 for The Coldest Case, book 14 in the Bruno series by Martin Walker. Fun and upbeat, with an amusing twist in the tail that bumped the rating from 4 to 4.25. Now on to Informed Consent, book 8 in Melissa F. Miller's Sasha McCandless series.
