Thanks. I know epub doesn't work on my old Kindle. Was wondering if maybe it did now. Is there a preferred choice between AZW3 and KFX? And just in case I throw in the towel on this Colorsoft, is either compatible with non-Kindle ereaders?

KF8 is a better format overall then KFX.

Which of them is better depends on your individual preferences. KFX has enhanced typesetting and hyphenation, but doesn't work with the FONT_RAMP hack (customized font sizes), is not editable and has a fixed minimum line height.

Neither works with non-Kindle ereaders (or if they do, the support for them is very poor).

Is there any reason not to just stick with Mobi since that's the format that 90% of my library is in? Does it support this ASIN workaround for cover art?

This ASIN workaround would need to be done with KF8 as you can edit it and add in the correct ASIN.

If Mobi the source format for all of those eBooks or did you convert from a different format? If you still have the source format, convert to KF8 and dump the Mobi.

Only if you don't care about using a custom font or adjusting the weight ("boldness").

This thread is about the Kindle Colorsoft. I thought I'd read that sideloaded books must be in KFX format if you want to see your covers in colour. That would appear to rule out MOBI/AZW3 completely. I can't see much point buying a colour device if I can only see B/W covers ... or have I completely misunderstood the situation?

I think MOBI/AZW3 work as well if they're marked as PDOC instead of EBOK, but I'm not sure.

When I try to extract, it's failing because the "extract_amazon_identifiers()" function doesn't seem to exist. Shouldn't that exist in the asin_fixer.py source code or did I miss installing something?

Also, is there a preferred format for the book like epub, mobi, etc..? I think out of necessity all my epub have been converted to mobi for my older Paperwhite.
Yeah, the script got mangled a little bit when I tried to copy paste it into the gist. I've fixed those issues now, so it should work.

As long has the device has a vendor id of 0x1949 calibre assumes its a kindle and creates the amazon-cover-bug folder and puts the cover cache in there automatically.
Well, I have same problem with "second" generation of Scribe 2024. Calibre correctly identifies the device as Kindle Scribe, however it will NOT create the amazon-cover-bug folder and the cover cache.

Also, the comp. system (Win11) no longer sees the Scribe as the external drive.

Yes the second generation of scribes suffer the same issue as 2024 kindles. The writing on the wall is very clear amazon are gradually doing more and more to make the experience of reading your own content on their devices worse. I strongly suggest leaving the amazon ecosystem.

If the cdetype is set to PDOC, the ebook has a cover page/image and the filetype is mobi or KF8/azw3, the cover will be taken from the document. I've only heard one person complaining that the book cover thumbnail is tagged as document in the Kindle's GUI.

Yeh, I wish I did that several years ago..... 5,000 books converted to azw3 later.... Some of them are purchase from Amazon, many are purchase from other vendors including different countries and language.

So, my question is, are you given up in Calibre this issue and left us in cold? (Us, who are not technically good to write code and/or solve digital problem). It was such an relive and joy when Calibre overcome the hurdle with "Amazon bug".

Well thank anyway for your great job in Calibre!

Leave you in the cold? Amazon removed the ability to do that. What do you expect me to do about it? Stick a gun to Bezos' head?
