Screen: 700 versus 500 (not 505)

I know the 700 reportedly has much worse contrast than the 505, but how does it compare to the 500?

It's pretty similar. The 700 is maybe just a tad worse, but it's not really significantly different.

Thanks As a 500 owner considering upgrading to the 700, I was a bit worried about all the criticism of the screen. But knowing it should be approximately the same as what I currently have is reassuring.

Anybody else want to offer their opinion/confirmation of this?

It's been a long time since I've seen a 500, but I remember it being better (more contrast, less glare). The only side by side picture I've seen is the one in this review.

I have put then side by side and I believe that in good light conditions they are pretty much the same (the 700 is a little bit glossier, I guess).

Under low light conditions, thought, the 700 has a clear edge due to it's internal side lights - which I use to read even in completely dark places, light planes.

I have them both and find very little difference between the 500 and the 700.

Most of the complaining about the 700 screen came from 505 users -- there is a big difference between them. Not an unreadable difference, but very noticeable nonetheless.

But between the 500 and the 700, you'll wonder what all the fussing has been about.

I figured I should just update this thread to say that I got to take a look at the 700 at a Sony store, and indeed found little difference between that screen and the one I'm used to on the 500.

Were you properly welcomed? If not, let me say welcome to MobileRead!
I have the 700 and love it. Can't say I ever saw the 500 though. So, are you thinking of upgrading to the 700?

Thanks for the welcome

Actually, I'm really eager to upgrade to the 700 for the searching/notating/highlighting, as well as the light, and the USB charging (I travel a lot). But for now I've decided to wait. When I tested out the unit in the store, it seemed like entering notes was a bit cumbersome. I think I had to first highlight (which wasn't a speedy thing in itself), and then double-tap (which I often had to repeat in order for it to work) before I could actually begin entering notes. The unit was buggy in general and kept crashing, so I suppose there's a possibility that entering notes is a smoother process on more functional units. Since that's one of the main features I'm looking to upgrade for, I figured I'd wait for the next generation.

I was also disappointed that the design emphasizes finger-swipe page turns instead of button page turns. I don't mind the feature, but I don't like how the buttons have been shrunken and are less ergonomically placed.

Maybe that all belongs in another thread, but to bring it back to the topic of this thread, I had no issues with the screen.
