window manager

is it possible to put an alternative window manager like dwm on the kindle? (IIRC here we have aweseom installed?)

it is very small and I wouldn't mind the small bar at the top above my books if it means I can switch fast to e.g. my music control program (ncmpcc or gmpc or something like that)

not directly with a great deal of ease.

Assuming you have a reasonable level of skill in these areas it would most probably be possible (but the PW is not the easiest of devices to recover at the moment - or indeed in the forseeable future) I would recommend at the very least a serial cable for recovery purposes and some upstart script hacking to begin with.

Possibly crafting/refactoring the existing scripts to ALLOW for awesome to be UNLOADED and then loading the DWM via some for of scripting mechanism would be the answer.

Doukan effectively does this now via the KUAL launcher I believe, but I could be wrong.

Of course using debian and a Xephyr overlay this is entirely possible.

I will have a look at dwm via that method to - but an overlay would be a WAY easier path than replacing what is currently in place.

that's just my opinion other may have a different one.

Well, the problem i have with xephyr is that it doesn't allow me to have the actual kindle software on one tag of the wm and my other stuff on other tags.

Might I ask just how you have tested that.
Or what works you did to investigate possible solutions

The only thing I tried was killing awesome so far.
And it kept coming back

That's because it's just that awesome.

(Also, it's because killing your window manager normally quits X: Amazon would presumably rather that it just recover quietly and not let anything else die, since the wm has a basically invisible infrastructural purpose on the Kindle.)

you can run Xorg manually, like you're used to after issueing "stop x".
Issue solved. All window managers possible.

I chose lxde

it was necessary to run
