Eden, Emily: The Semi-Detached House, v.1, 11 Feb 2008.

The Hon. Emily Eden (1797-1869):
The Semi-Detached House (1859).

Done in response to a request.

A society novel. The young Lady Chester is persuaded to take a semi-detached house near London, so as to benefit from the fresh air while awaiting ‘an interesting event’. Her husband is on a diplomatic mission to Berlin.
Meanwhile the newspaper ‘The Weekly Lyre’ [read as ‘liar’] announces a rumour of a separation in high society and that a certain lord’s ‘chère amie’ has been installed in a country villa.
The neighbours in the other half of the semi-detached house are horrified and begin to imagine the worst...

Sounds interesting. For those of us on the left side of the Atlantic, is "semi-detached" a name for a single building that has 2 houses in it?

That's right, Wood.
Don't you have them in the US? Or do you call them something else?

The name used in this area is "duplex". Many in the south are split where one lives on the ground floor and the other has the top floor. There are a lot of them in Baltimore (although they seem to favor townhouses -- a few years back they had the highest percentage of townhouses in the US.)

Thanks for the clarification.

Semis in the uk are in effect two houses pushed together. There are a lot of them (I live in a street of Victorian semis) and they are stil being built today.
They economise on building materials and use space quite efficiently. But they are not so good if you have noisy neighbours.
