yse, i was keeping it simple. lets say this.
there is only one version of each model designation. All are android devices which were marketed as e readers, all are obsolete. ( stuck at android 4 ). Kobo has left that market.

There is none. Kobo support told me it should not work and I should have magically known that I had to do an update for a 7 years old device before a factory reset. Really bad company in my opinion.

There is a solution. I tried to explain in my post:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...0&postcount=26

You must drag and drop the software to the folder on the ARC while hooked up to a USB port, on a windows computer (I think mac will not work). Then restart and the update should apply.

Follow the instructions as written, you may have to try multiple times.

I already did that and it does not work. The customer support told me I had to do the update before the factory reset. But I did the update after the factory reset, so it does not work.

No one makes a custom ROM. It already has a factory rom from when it was made. I don't get how you think replacing it can help. Just write it off or sell it for parts. Someone else may have got the update done but is in the market for a replacement screen or battery...

So I have done a factory reset, before reading that I needed to update before a factory reset.

I have manage to do the update manually, but I'm stuck in the Wifi connection problem. How do I manage to skip this step?

With the help of el_pablo, here was the method I used to unlock my arc 10hd:

1: Enable usb debugging
Boot the arc 10 hd
When The keyboard pops for the password.
Press on the keyboard settings button. Which in my case is the key at the bottom left.
Select Google Keyboard Settings
Select "Personnal dictionnary"
The Settings app will open.
Now you should be able to connect to the Wifi.
Go to "About Kobo Arc 10HD"
Tap 7 times on "Kernel version" (or Build Number). This will activate the "Developer options"
In "Developer options", activate USB debugging.
In the security tab, activate "Unknown source" apps.

2: Enable root
To enable root, I used the cydia impactor method of this thread ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho....php?t=2507886) . However, the newest application does not work, so I had to use an old version.

Here is the file I used:
http://cache.saurik.com/impactor/win...tor_0.9.14.zip

3: Remove blootware
Open an adb shell
In the adb shell type su to go in root

Use this command to make the system directory writable
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
go to system/app directory and then remove the apk you no longer want. I removed some Kobo apk.

cd system
cd app
rm KoboSetupWizard.apk
rm KoboJIT.apk
rm KoboReader.apk
rm KoboStubs.apk

I also went to data\data to remove the com.kobo.setupwizard directory, but I don't think it is necessary:
rm -r com.kobo.setupwizard

I....like the majority. Did a reset to factory on my Arc 7HD and now am stuck at the wifi screen. Grrr. Someone out there must have a custom rom or something to get around this?

p.s. yes i copied the update.zip file to the Arc many times and it did not work. Same issue.
